Become an IEEE Senior Member

Senior member is the highest grade for which IEEE members can apply. IEEE members can self-nominate, or be nominated, for Senior Member grade.

To be eligible for application or nomination, candidates must:

  • Be engineers, scientists, educators, technical executives, or originators in IEEE-designated fields
  • Have experience reflecting professional maturity
  • Have been in professional practice for at least ten years (with some credit for certain degrees)
  • Show significant performance over a period of at least five of their years in professional practice

Prospective members who would like to apply directly for Senior Member grade must first join IEEE and then submit the Senior Member application form. An IEEE member number is required on the Senior Member application. There is no additional fee to apply for Senior Member grade.

Benefits of Senior Membership

  • Recognition: The professional recognition of your peers for technical and professional excellence.
  • Senior Member plaque: All newly elevated Senior members receive an engraved Senior Member plaque to be proudly displayed for colleagues, clients, and employers to see. The plaque, made of fine wood with bronze engraving, is sent within six to eight weeks after elevation.
  • US$25 coupon: IEEE will recognize all newly elevated Senior members with a coupon worth up to US$25. This coupon can be used to join one new IEEE Society. The coupon expires on 31 December of the year in which it is received.
  • Letter of commendation: A letter of commendation can be sent to your employer on the achievement of Senior Member grade upon the request of the newly elected Senior member.
  • Announcements: Announcement of elevation can be made upon request to your Section/Society in their local newsletters, newspapers, and notices.
  • Leadership Eligibility: Senior members are eligible to hold executive IEEE volunteer positions.
  • Ability to refer other candidates: Senior members can serve as a reference for other applicants for senior membership.
  • Review panel: Senior members are invited to be on the panel to review Senior member applications.
  • US$25 referral coupon: Newly elevated Senior members are encouraged to find the next innovators of tomorrow and invite them to join IEEE. Invite them to join and the new IEEE member will receive US$25 off their first year of membership.

2016 IEEE Albuquerque Section Awards — Open for nominations

Each year the IEEE Albuquerque Section recognizes the efforts of its membership to improve the organization and bring merit to our profession.

IEEE Photonics Society Special Seminar: Engineerable Phased-Array Sources Based on Nonlinear Metamaterial Nanocavities

Abstract: We propose a new concept for phased-array sources at infrared frequencies based on the second harmonic generation capacity of metamaterial nanocavities strongly coupled to a highly nonlinear semiconductor heterostructure comprising intersubband transitions in quantum wells (QWs). This system is attractive for the manipulation of the direction, shape, and polarization of optical beams. The metamaterial nanocavity is designed to support both a fundamental resonance and an orthogonally polarized resonance at the second harmonic frequency. The asymmetric QW structure is designed to provide a large second order susceptibility. Optical pumping of the nanocavity induces a localized, phase-locked, nonlinear resonant polarization that acts as a source feed for a higher order resonance of the nanocavity. Varying the nanocavity design enables the production of beams with arbitrary shape and polarization. Due to the sub-wavelength extent of our QW structure, we are not limited by phase matching conditions as one would have for a conventional nonlinear crystal. Upon continuous wave illumination at the fundamental frequency we observe second harmonic signals in both the forward and backward directions. We achieve very efficient overall second harmonic generation given the deep sub-wavelength dimensions of the QW structure (at mid-infrared, about 1/15th of the free space wavelength of 10 μm). We also demonstrate two second harmonic phased-array sources that perform two optical functions at the second harmonic wavelength (~5 μm): a beam splitter and a polarizing beam splitter. Such systems represent a viable strategy for designing easily fabricated phased-array sources across the entire infrared spectrum through proper choice of QW and nanocavity designs.

Biography: Salvatore Campione received a Laurea Triennale degree (cum laude) and a Laurea Magistrale degree (cum laude) in electronic engineering from the Polytechnic of Turin, Italy, in 2007 and 2009, respectively. He also received a Master of Science degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago, IL, USA, in 2009, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California Irvine, CA, USA, in 2013. He was a visiting scholar at the U.S. Army Charles M. Bowden Research Center, RDECOM, Redstone Arsenal, AL, USA in 2012 and at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM, USA in 2012 and 2013. He joined Sandia National Laboratories in 2014, where he is currently a Postdoctoral Appointee. He has published more than 45 peer-reviewed journal articles, more than 75 conference papers, 1 provisional patent, and 2 book chapters. His research interests fall in the general area of applied electromagnetics, including electromagnetic analysis and modeling of complex structures, antenna radiation, computational electromagnetics, metamaterials, plasmonics, nanophotonics, and optical devices for energy and optoelectronic applications. Among other awards, he has been selected as a 2013 Marconi Society Paul Baran Young Scholar (3 awarded each year worldwide), recognizing his academic achievements and leadership in the field of communications and information science.

University of New Mexico IEEE Student Branch — New faces

The University of New Mexico’s IEEE Student Branch has a couple of new faces. The new branch president is Craig Robertson. The new Branch faculty advisor is Dr. Jane Leher (Dr. Jane Lehr, UNM Student Branch Faculty Advisor).

The UNM Student Branch is working very hard to revitalize its activities and also to get back its lounge which is now used as temporary storage after the ECE building flooded last Summer.

They are also looking for new branch members. They will be putting together a couple of activities aimed at recruiting. Please check with them if you are interested, simply curious, or would like to help them in any way.

New Mexico Tech Student Branch — Activities outlook

On August 27th, the New Mexico Tech IEEE Student Branch held its first meeting of the new school year.

The meeting had the objective of introducing the branch members to the officers and explain their goals for the semester/year. They gave a preliminary slideshow detailing these aims, which include sending members to the ICCE in January and sponsoring teams for a drone competition to be held in the spring. Approximately 30 people were present for the entire meeting, with a couple others popping in for a few minutes.
