Team,

As IEEE PES members part of our mission is to be the leading provider of scientific and engineering information on electric power and energy for the betterment of society. In order to do this the IEEE PES encourages, participates, and sponsors many community events, both inside and outside the United States.

As IEEE PES Atlanta Chapter members we do our best to join our Greater Atlanta Community either directly or through IEEE Student Chapters. Ms. Melody Richardson, IEEE Atlanta Section K-12 Outreach Chair, has presented us as a chapter and you as individual members with a great opportunity to join our community as guest science ambassadors at the upcoming Atlanta Science Festivals Exploration Expo which is set to occur on March 28th from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm in Centennial Olympic Park. As a guest science ambassador, you would lead a 30 minute activity in the IEEEs pavilion for, primarily, elementary school students and their parents.   You would have the liberty to determine the topic and the presentation of your content, i.e. whether it is a demonstration or hands-on activity.  The goal is to provide a fun, hands-on experience with science for the elementary students and their parents. Your participation provides the opportunity to educate families about the wonders of STEM and provides an opportunity for students to engage with practicing scientists. Please, if you are interested in being a Science Ambassador for the ASF Exploration Expo, let Ms. Melody Richardson (richardson.melody@gmail.com) or myself, Daniel Diaz (mr.daniel.d@ieee.org), know by Friday, February 27th in order to properly coordinate this effort.

Additionally, we have been presented with another great opportunity via our relationship with the Georgia Tech IEEE PES Student Chapter. The Student Chapter, in collaboration with the IEEE PES Community Solutions Initiative (http://communitysolutionsinitiative.org/), is currently working on providing citizens in the Caribbean country of Haiti a full lightweight solar station, i.e. solar panels, energy storage system, inverters, etcetera. In order to fully accomplish this they need our help. They need our help in gathering material that matches and fits their needs as well as monetary help in order to buy materials that do not get donated as well as be able to send two of their student members to Haiti in order to fully assemble the system. Please, if you are able to help the noble effort of the Georgia Tech IEEE PES Student Chapter contact either Mr. John Seuss, Georgia Tech IEEE PES Student Chapter Chair, at jseuss@gatech.edu or myself, Daniel Diaz (mr.daniel.d@ieee.org), as soon as possible.

Lastly, I am not only proud to be a member of the IEEE but even more so to be in the ranks of our outstanding organization, the Power and Energy Society. I look forward to keep on serving you as your chair throughout 2015 and, please, do not hesitate to contact me or your IEEE PES Atlanta Chapter officers (https://webinabox.vtools.ieee.org/wibp_home/index/CH03012) if there is anything we can help or assist you with.
