Nuclear Power: Past, Present and Future

This presentation offers an abbreviated walkthrough of nuclear power in various commercial applications from its beginnings in the late 1950s to the present. The types of nuclear power plants, which have achieved widespread commercial operation, are briefly described, including some of their salient advantages and their disadvantages. A few of the significant events that have shaped the industry over the decades from the Three Mile Island accident to Fukushima are examined. Some of the safety and waste disposal issues are also addressed. The current planned additions of new power reactors in the US and abroad are also addressed. And finally, some on-going and future power plant designs are discussed including advanced small modular reactors (SMRs) for developing safe, clean, and affordable nuclear energy.
