Our section has formed a new IEEE Young Professionals (YP) Affinity Group this year! You can find out more about IEEE YP at http://yp.ieee.org/.

Have you received your first professional degree in the last ten years? Do you want to expand your professional network and lead a group of other young professionals in one of the most innovative IEEE sections in the world? If so, then please contact Tim O’Connell for more information about joining and/or leading our YP group.

Tim O’Connell will serve as the interim YP Chair until a permanent Chair can be found. We are actively searching for a permanent chair for 2017.

The IEEE Region 4 Outstanding Student for 2016 is Central Illinois’ own Christopher Barth from the University of Illinois! The Central Illinois Section offers our congratulations to Christopher, who is currently studying and working toward a PhD in the Power and Energy Systems group at the U. of I. We are proud to have Christopher and so many other outstanding students and future electrical engineers in our section.

Our November meeting will be a Tech Talk with Dr. Kiruba Haran on Wednesday, November 9th. Dr. Haran will discuss High-Specific-Power Machines and Drives for Aircraft Propulsion. Click here for the newsletter and here to register.

About the speaker:

Kiruba S. Haran obtained a PhD in Electric Power Engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY, in 2000. He spent 13 years as a senior engineer and manager of the research group developing advanced electrical machine technology at GE Research. He moved to the University of Illinois in 2014 as an Associate Professor and Associate Director of the Grainger Center for Electric Machinery and Electromechanics. His research focus in recent years has been on high specific power machines and drives for mobile applications, with both superconducting and non-cryogenic approaches. He serves on the Steering Committee of the IEEE Transportation Electrification Community, is the current Chair of the Electric Machinery Committee of IEEE-PES, and is an editor of the IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion. He is a registered Professional Engineer in New York and is a Fellow of the IEEE.

About the tour:

Have you ever wanted to tour a video game studio and see how your favorite games are made? Volition, maker of the popular Saints Row and Red Faction game series, is located right here in Central Illinois in downtown Champaign! Come tour their studio and talk to some of their programmers and game designers with your fellow IEEE Central Illinois Section members. Refreshments will be provided and we will have an opportunity for Q&A with Volition programmers.
