December 7th, 2017 meeting at Bradley University

Tuesday, November 28th, 2017

Please join us on Thursday, Dec. 7th, 2017 from 6:00 to 7:30 pm for an educational and technical event on the Bradley University campus presented by Bradley’s Dr. Mohammad S. Imtiaz.

The contraction of the heart is highly coordinated for pumping blood through the body. Generation and conduction of electrical signals, known as action potentials, underlie the sequential contraction of the heart muscle. A very large number of complex interacting ionic channels in each heart cell are involved in generation of action potentials and propagation of membrane potentials. Mathematical modeling and computational simulations have proven to be indispensable tools for understanding these interactions, and investigating heart function and dysfunction. Importantly, mathematical/computational modeling are also greatly facilitating our understanding of drugs and their actions on the heart.

The aim of this project is to investigate the effect of structural heart disease, such as fibrosis, tissue necrosis, etc., which result in abnormalities of the electrical properties of the heart. Importantly, this project investigates the interaction of drugs with structural abnormalities and aims to predict life-threatening drug related interactions.

In this presentation, Dr. Imtiaz will present an overview of the heart from an electrical perspective. Examples of aberrant electrical/chemical events will be presented that can result in diseases and life-threatening events, such as cardiac arrhythmia. Emerging results from his ongoing research will be presented to show how they are using mathematical modeling, machine learning, and high-performance computing to accelerate discovery of novel cures and drugs.

Particle Swarm Optimization meeting, Wed., Dec. 6th, ISU campus

Tuesday, November 28th, 2017

Please join us on Wednesday, Dec. 6th, 2017 from 6:00 to 7:30 for an educational and technical event on the Illinois State University (ISU) campus. Drs. Elliackin Messias Figueiredo and Hugo Valadares Siqueira are Brazilian Visiting Scholars in the Department of Technology at ISU. They are here as part of the Fulbright Distinguished Chair award that Prof. Anu A. Gokhale received for 2016-17. The research team comprises of professors, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students in Brazil and at ISU. The talk will provide an overview of the studies undertaken by this group.

Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a bio-inspired technique that has been applied successfully in many fields to solve optimization problems. In particular, the speakers will address applications in machine learning such as clustering, classification, and feature selection. The focus will be on two machine learning tasks, namely, time series forecasting of riverflow and pollutant dispersion, and clustering undergraduate students based on their grammatical errors.

Additionally, the speakers will briefly reflect on their experiences in the U.S. and provide some personal insights into similarities and differences between the U.S. and Brazilian cultures.
