July 7-11, 2014 Executive Committee (ExCom) Meetings, Highlights and Activities
- A Six-month strategic plan was drafted and presented by the Chair to the ExCom on July 11, 2014. The ExCom discussed and refined the plan accordingly. The plan will be used to drive activities through the end of the year and will be revised/updated as needed.
- Goals: The Section must continue to recruit and encourage volunteerism; engage student leaders, Young Professionals, and WIE; continue to engage the community and establish viable, relevant, and meaningful relationships with industries and across disciplines; continue to expand its core leadership and grow membership; and fund innovations, humanitarian, and other IEEE sanctioned activities.
- Chapter Meetings: Meetings of special interest groups will be called as needed. These will support the formation of the previously identified Society Chapters, Young Professionals, and Women in Engineering.
- Technical Meetings and Topics: Four advanced technical sessions will be planned for September-November 2014. Topics will be driven by members interests, the Lightning Round results, recent responses to the Formation Petitions for Society Chapters, and IEEE “hot topics”: Cyber Security, Power & Energy, Communications, and Internet of Things.
- Format: Technical sessions will be held in public and and meetings will be held in appropriate locations, offer networking and career opportunities, receptions, community leaders/experts, recruit IEEE members, and be chaired by a Section member.
- Venues: After review of four locations, it was determined the four technical sessions will be held at IT-ology and the Section should revisit the SC State Museum in 2015 for at least one event. A location for the December Annual Meeting is to be determined.
- Dates: All dates were selected given discovery of other events planned for the same timeframe. Input from IT-ology identified events that complimented Section events or targeted very different, closed audiences. Final dates were also influenced by local calendars.
- Registration: Meeting registrations for local professional conferences and other IEEE Sections were compared to develop registration for the four technical sessions. Registration amounts were set for the low mid-range.
- Time: Events will be in the 5:30PM – 8:30PM timeframe per the Lightning Round.
- The Student Branches were encouraged to add one October event involving State IT professionals.
- The ExCom will meet every Thursday, 8:30PM-9:30PM via conference as needed.
- The Chair thanked the ExCom for their hard work to complete venue tours and fact-finding efforts as well as participating in the conference calls and decision-making.

The Chair emailed current Senior Members a request for “Columbia Section References Needed For Senior Member Nominations.” The goal was to assist the many members eligible to be elevated to IEEE Senior Member status. Senior Member status has everything to do with distinguishing you for your level of significant contributions to and performance in your professional community. (It is not recognition of years of membership in IEEE, as sometimes mistaken by new members.)
