Consulting Engineers Needed – Project RD5075

About the client
Company is a leading manufacturer of temperature sensors and transmitters, pressure measurement instrumentation and industrial fiber optic data networking equipment.

About the engagement
Client is seeking consultants to supplement its in-house project team engaged in a fast-track limited re-design for manufacturability of the electronic sub-assemblies of a mature pressure transmitter. Consultant will report to project manager located in Round Rock, Texas. Consultant may work remotely and collaborate with PM and project team by phone and email.

Job Code RD5075-01 – Senior Electrical/Electronics Engineer – Analog Circuits (~40 hrs over 3 months beginning 4/12/2010)
Seeking a senior-level consultant with theoretical knowledge and applied experience designing instrumentation operational-amplifier circuits using discrete JFETs and Bipolar transistors. Previous experience with radiation hardened electronics considered a plus. Consultant will be responsible for developing a theoretical model of an existing product design and suggesting improvements for robust performance and manufacturability; must be able to explain the basis for component selection and values in the op-amp circuit. Consultant will assist in the specification of commercially available off-the-shelf components including JFET and bipolar transistors as replacements for certain end of life items. Knowledge of chopper amplifiers designed with discrete transistors required. The consultant will be required to analyze the printed circuit board layout to minimize the effects of humidity, noise, and stray capacitance.

Job Code RD5075-02 – EMC/RFI Compliance Engineer (~40 hrs over 3 months beginning 4/26/2010)
Seeking a senior-level EMC/RFI consultant to address the grounding and shielding of electronic circuits on the basis of minimizing emissions and their susceptibility to EMI/RFI and power surges and to determine the adequacy of designs with respect to standards for electromagnetic and radio-frequency interference in a safety-related pressure transmitter. Consultant will review designs for adequacy according to recommended practices for analog systems that address the grounding and shielding of electronic circuits on the basis of minimizing emissions and their susceptibility to EMI/RFI and power surges to ensure compliance to REGULATORY GUIDE 1.180 (IEEE Std 1050-1996).  Consultant will be required to develop test plans, coordinate with test labs and oversee testing for design verification measures for EMI/RFI (emissions and susceptibility) according to the applicable EMI/RFI test methods in MIL-STD-461E and the IEC 610001.180-6 Series (i.e., the most recently issued military and international commercial guidance), along with custom operating envelopes developed to represent the characteristic electromagnetic environment for nuclear power plants. The test methods and operating envelopes are cited in Regulatory Positions 3, 4, and 6 of REGULATORY GUIDE 1.180.

Job Code RD5075-02 – Senior Electrical/Electronics Engineer – Electromagnetic specialist – low power/low frequency signal transformers (~20 hrs over 1 months beginning 4/12/2010)
Seeking a senior-level engineer with specialist knowledge of low power/low frequency signal transformers used in instrument amplifier circuits. Consultant will guide client in selection of commercial off the shelf signal transformers for incorporation in robust electronic instrument amplifier circuits. Consultant must possess extensive domain knowledge and experience and be able to educate client on signal transformer concepts and specification considerations including transformer theory, modeling, and testing in amplifier/oscillator circuits. Ability to make recommendations to minimize undesirable environmental effects including humidity, contamination, resistance and stray capacitance are required.
