On behalf of UTDallas Computer Science department, I invite you to attend Computer Science Senior Design Day for 2012 Spring semester. It will be held on May 11th (Friday) 11:30am – 5pm in the TI Auditorium of the Erik Jonsson School, south building. All graduating CS undergraduate students will present their Senior Design Projects. Each student team will give a 5-minute presentation. A poster session will follow.

Here is the agenda for CS senior design day:

11:30am Lunch for students & industry visitors (RSVP required)
1:00 pm Welcome/Introduction (TI auditorium)
~1:15 pm 5 minute presentations begin (TI auditorium)
~3:30 pm Light refreshments & poster session (Foyer area)
5pm Wrap up

Your RSVP will enable us to plan the day better. In addition to ensuring that every one gets lunch, I will reply to your RSVP with a parking pass for the event. Please print it and put in the dashboard of your vehicle when you arrive. If you forget it, no problem – enter through the University Drive entrance from Campbell Rd. and get a visitor pass from the Visitor Center.

If you cannot make it to lunch but you want to come directly for presentations @ 1 pm, click here and email us – We will send you a parking pass. If you are not familiar with UT Dallas, see http://www.utdallas.edu/maps/ to get an idea. ECSS building is right in the middle.

I hope you will join us on Senior Design Day to review & celebrate our students’ work. Please feel free to email or call me if you have any questions. Thanks!

UNT Needs Volunteers for Robotics Event on May 5

Saturday, April 7th, 2012

My name is Becky Caillier.  I am on the Girl Scout 100 Year Anniversary Committee for Area 4 and Area 6.  We are planning on doing a celebration event in Denton at TWU on May 5th from 1pm – 5pm.  The event will be in Pioneer Hall on Bell Avenue.

We will be having a Robotics Station at this event, but are in need of volunteers to help facilitate.  We currently have about 7 students from the UNT IEEE chapter that will be in attendance.  Our room can hold up to 24 girls and we were hoping for 1 volunteer per 4 girls plus additional hands to help with the mini competition that would take place after the girls built their robots.

We are currently looking for additional volunteers that might be willing to help us run this station.  We are looking at having the girls rotate in 1 hour spans of time with 30 – 45 minutes for the robot build and then 30 or 15 minutes for the “competition/game”.   Robots-4-U has 2 robots a SUMOBOT and TARMI.  The games would include with the SUMOBOT each person trying to push the other robot out of the designated area.  The TARMI game would include a chase of sorts and the first robot to capture the item will win.

I was hoping you might be able to provide me with local contacts in the engineering field that might be interested in volunteering at our event.

If needed, volunteers could meet prior to May 5th to look at the robots and put one together.  At the event, volunteers will be expected to guide the girls in the building of the robots.  The robots are put together with a screwdriver only.  The girls would build the robot with the volunteer’s guidance/mentoring.  The volunteers would also need to take the robots apart after the game.  The room we are looking at holds 40 students.  We are hoping we could get 6 or 7 groups of 4 per hour cycled through.  This would give us 24 – 28 girls per hour.

This station is only being offered to girls in the 6th – 12th grade, but depending on how many girls we have attend in this age group we may  add 4th – 5th graders.

In addition, we will have other STEM type stations – Stomp Rockets – where girls will build paper rockets then launch them from an air launcher, Rope Runner Derby – similar to the box car derby, but girls will build a Rope Runner to race on a nylon rope; Parachute Drop – Girls will build parachutes to launch and hit a target and Letterboxing / Geocaching where girls can use compass/map skills to find treasures hidden throughout the campus.

Please let me know if you think your group might have bandwidth to help us or if you are aware of other groups that might be available that you can provide.  Should you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 972-921-1488.

 Your reply is greatly appreciated.
