Abstract:[]Cloud computing forms the backbone of modern ubiquitous computing services that we utilizeon a daily basis across our many smart and connected devices. Today, general-purpose chat-bots, socialmedia, online gaming, recommendation engines, and billions of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices relyheavily on cloud computing platforms. These platforms consist of data centers that can have hundreds ofthousands of compute servers, as well as extensive networking and storage support to meet the growingperformance needs of contemporary cloud applications. Over time, these data centers have become oneof the largest energy consumers in the world, consuming up to 2% of the global energy supply, withexperts estimating a rise to 13% by 2030. In the past, data center energy consumption was simplyconsidered a cost burden to be minimized to increase profits for providers. However, with the increasingconcern about climate change, and the rising CO 2 emissions and water use associated with energyproduction and data center operation, data centers are now seen as one of the biggest problems inachieving the goal of limiting global warming. In this talk, I will present my vision of how we can hope toachieve environmentally sustainable cloud computing. The IEEE Student Branches of the Denver Metropolitan Area will have a chance to tour a 115kV distribution substation owned by United Power. The tour will be guided by United Power's Engineering Director, Donald McDaniel and CU Denver graduate Cory van Duyne. The substation is located about 30min north of the CU Denver campus. We will be able to see a few breakers hooked up in a ring bus configuration, a few instrument transformers (CTs and PTs), a 115/13.2kV transformer and the control room that has a few protective relays and etc. There is also a new 8MW battery installation at the substation.
