We apologize for any inconvenience. Due to an unexpected illness, we have decided to postpone the workshop. For those who have already made travel arrangements, please cancel them. If you incur any non-refundable expenses, please contact Kathy Grise, k.l.grise@ieee.org.

Location: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)

Date: TBD

Description: “Smart materials” are responsive to their environment (passive) and/or external stimuli (active) in such a way that they serve an enabling technological function. This intentionally broad definition includes examples such as shape memory alloys, piezoelectrics, electro/photo/thermo-chromics, self-healing polymers, coupled magnetics, re-configurable devices/components, soft robotics, and many others. While there are several strong established communities in this area, we believe that there is an opportunity to collaboratively connect people and technologies across the current materials and/or application focus, to address common issues that may center around phenomenology, controls, reliability, integration, adoption and standards, or any number of others.  The primary purpose of this workshop is to explore and identify such opportunities that do not infringe upon existing communities, but instead partner and facilitate greater reach and impact.

IEEE Future Directions and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will host a two day workshop on Thursday and Friday October 13 and 14, 2016, and you are invited to attend.  The workshop will include leaders from across the Smart Materials landscape, and this is a great opportunity to help shape the future of this important and growing field. The workshop will start at 10 am local time, Thursday, October 13. A dinner reception will be held the same day.

Please “save the date”, 13 and 14 October 2016, Troy, NY, USA.
