About EMB Society

This society is primarily interested in the “application of the concepts and methods of the physical and engineering sciences in biology and medicine. This covers a very broad spectrum ranging from formalized mathematical theory through experimental science and technological development to practical clinical applications. It includes support of scientific, technological, and educational activities.”

Biomedical engineering “combines the design and problem solving expertise of engineering with the medical expertise of physicians to help improve patient health care and their quality of life. Much of the work in biomedical engineering consists of research and development, covering an array of fields: bioinformatics, medical imaging, image processing, physiological signal processing, biomechanics, biomaterials and bioengineering to name a few. Some examples of concrete applications of biomedical engineering are the development and manufacture of biocompatible prostheses, BioMEMS, biosensors, medical devices, diagnostic devices and imaging equipment such as MRIs and EEGs, and pharmaceuticals.” (Wikipedia)

Biomedical Engineering in the Tampa Bay Area

This is what the Greater Tampa Chamber Of Commerce says about our area:

Nearly 200 biomedical companies in Hillsborough County generate $1.3 billion in annual revenue and employ more than 10,000 people. Additionally, the University of South Florida is a leading medical research center involved in advanced microelectronic research and procuring $67 million in annual grants.

Tampa has been nationally recognized as 5th out of the top 20 cities for high-tech jobs in the Southeastern United States (Nielson’s 2000 ratings), the largest Cybercity in Florida with more than 43,000 high-tech workers, and the 27th largest Cybercity in America (American Electronics Association).
