This training seminar explores the theory, application, sizing, selection and testing of synchronous generators taking into consideration customer design preferences, electrical and mechanical variables, site power & driver equipment requirements, environmental conditions and, the interaction with other systems.
Travis Kittleson (Leroy-Somer/Kato Engineering)
Travis J. Kittleson achieved his B.S. Electrical Engineering in 2005 at Minnesota State University in Mankato MN. From 2005-2012 he worked as an electrical engineer doing design of controls for HVAC service equipment at SPX Corporation in Owatonna MN (now Bosch Automotive). Over the last 4 years, at Kato Engineering_Leroy Somer in North Mankato, he has been responsible for the design and analysis of rotating machinery and, support of manufacturing and testing of rotating machinery.
Dry type transformers are used in some of the most onerous applications. The seminar will explore the various constructions used in dry type transformers and how they are specified and applied. Testing methods and failure modes will also be explained.
Derek Foster (Magnetic Designs)
Derek Foster was born and educated in England. He entered the transformer industry in 1974 and has extensive experience in the design, manufacture and application of specialty transformers and inductors. In 1994, Derek came to the US as Director of Engineering for a dry-type transformer manufacturer and from 2007 to 2009, was involved in the setting up of a state of the art transformer manufacturing facility in China. His experience includes detailed design of transformers and inductors, transformer testing, failure analysis, preparation of specifications etc, for transformers for general electrical distribution systems, railway traction substations, marine applications (shipboard), offshore drilling etc. Derek is an active member of the IEEE Transformers Committee and is currently Chairman of the working group for IEEE Standard C57.12.91, IEEE Standard Test Code for Dry-Type Distribution and Power Transformers. In addition to being a member of several other working groups within the IEEE Transformers Committee, he is also a member of the IEEE Traction Power Substation Committee. Derek is currently President of Magnetics Design, LLC, providing consultancy services and sales of dry-type transformers.
The migration to LED Lighting is significantly impacting energy efficiency. This session covers the application of LED’s in an industrial complex. Additionally, lighting panel design requirement of NFPA 70E and the NEC have changed the playing field for these devices with respect to NEMA 1 and NEMA 7.
Andrew Agan (Eaton Crouse-Hinds )
Andrew Agan is the global product line manager for lighting at Eaton’s Crouse-Hinds Business focused on lighting solutions for harsh and hazardous applications. He is responsible for NEC and IEC products across LED, HID and fluorescent technologies. He has been in the global product line manager for lighting role for 4 years, during which there has been a heavy transition from conventional lighting technologies to LED. He previously spent 2 years as global product line manager for fittings and cable glands, and has been with Eaton over 10 years.
Kyle Barna (Eaton Crouse-Hinds )
Kyle Barna is the global product line manager for Control & Apparatus at Eaton’s Crouse-Hinds Business focused on power distribution and control solutions for harsh and hazardous applications. He is responsible for NEC and IEC products across Local Control, Power Distribution, Motor Control & Protection, Enclosures/ Terminal Boxes/ Instrument Housings product families. Niraj achieved BE in Instrumentation & Control from Gujarat University, India (1996). He is the Branch Manager of the Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Inc. (SEL) Special Protection Systems (SPS) in Pullman, Washington. He is an instrumentation and control engineer with 20 years of experience in process control, substation automation, electrical power distribution automation, application engineering, configuration, and onsite commissioning. His expertise includes supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA); human-machine interfaces (HMIs); energy management systems (EMS); distribution automation control (DAC); distribution automation (DA) simulation; programmable logic controller (PLC) and distributed control system (DCS) programming; configuration; process control and SCADA system architecture; and detailed engineering of instrumentation.
Roy Luo (SEL)
Roy Luo achieved BSEE in Electrical and Automation Engineering from Shanghai University of Engineering Science, China (2005) and a Master of Electrical Engineering from the University of Houston (2010). He has 11 years of experience in designing electrical systems conforming to the requirements of both the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the International Electro technical Commission (IEC). His areas of expertise covers power generation and distribution for energy and chemistry industries. Roy’s areas of interest include power management and control system (PMCS), facility network architecture design, special protection algorithms. He has designed electrical apparatuses that include both medium- and low-voltage switchgear, motor control centers (MCC), power transformers, dc drives and variable frequency drives, generator automatic voltage regulators (AVR), governors, and auto synchronization applications. He also possesses knowledge regarding power system studies and relay coordination.
Michael C. Tu, PE (Chevron)
Michael C. Tu, P.E. received his BS, magna cum laude, and MS in electrical engineering from the University of Houston in 2006 and 2012, respectively. He worked as a Senior Electrical Engineer at Dow Chemical since 2006, where he led major capital projects for power distribution and generation systems. In 2012, he joined Chevron as a Startup Electrical Engineer for the Deep Water Exploration and Production Facility. Michael currently serves as an Electrical Lead Engineer to provide construction, commissioning, and startup support for a Gulf of Mexico project. Michael is a registered professional engineer. Sean A. Blaylock shoulders 25 years of experience related to electrical power applications. He began his professional career with the General Electric Company tackling assignments in the power generation and electrical distribution divisions. In 1998, he transitioned into a new product development assignment with GNB Industrial Power (a division of Exide Technologies). During this period, he worked with industry end users, consultants and OEMs to specify and develop new stationary lead acid battery solutions for the telecommunications, UPS, solar, industrial, and utility infrastructure industries. A North Carolina A&T University graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Sean currently serves as the Director of GNB’s Marketing and Applications team covering the US, Canada and Mexico. Robert Spiewak (Polamex, Inc)
Robert M. Spiewak achieved BSEE equivalent from Krakow University of Technology, Poland (1988) and a Master of Electrical Engineering from the University of Houston (1996). He has 25 years of professional experience, including extensive field and theoretical experience in Power, Petrochemical, Pipeline, IPP and OEM Industries for Onshore and Offshore applications. Mr. Spiewak’s daily tasks include conceptual design, owner’s engineering, system and detail engineering, startup, maintenance and training. His areas of interest include power system design, control, and steady-state/transient analysis, electric machines, and electro-mechanical drive system controls. He specializes in industrial and power/utility applications, PAC systems, power system analysis, and special applications. With additional interest in renewable energy systems for islanded/micro grid applications, smart grid projects, and hybrid applications based on old and new energy technologies. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Texas. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, and he is a member of the PAS, CSS, PELS, and IAS Societies. Mr. Spiewak was a Teaching Fellow at University of Houston teaching graduate and doctoral classes related to the industrial power systems engineering, design, protection, control, monitoring, instrumentation and communication.

Eddie Guidry (Fluor)
Eddie Guidry is currently employed with Fluor Enterprises, Inc. as a Senior Fellow in Electrical Engineering and is highly skilled in Electrical and Control Systems for industrial construction, design and engineering. The majority of Eddie’s thirty-nine years of experience includes both upstream and downstream portions of petrochemical plants and refineries. He is active in the development of national and international codes and standards, and has been a principal member of NFPA’s National Electrical Code committee Panel 11 since 1999. He has been an active member of the NFPA’s Advisory Committee on Electrical Safety Research since 2008. He’s currently a member of the NFPA NEC High Voltage Task Group and Work Clearance Task Group. Eddie is a senior member of the IEEE and is serving as Vice Chair for the IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Electrochemical subcommittee. He has published a wide variety of articles across many industry publications over the past two decades. The author of a monthly blog for Electrical Construction Maintenance magazine, Eddie is also recognized by Penton Media as an industry code expert. He currently holds the Master Electrician license for Fluor in Texas and is a certified ICC/IAEI electrical inspector.
