IEEE IAS -Variable Frequency Drives and Harmonics

August 22, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm CDT

This presentation covers basics of variable frequency drives and their relation to harmonics in power systems.

VFDs are one of the non-linear loads commonly used in the power systems. This makes them one of the most common sources of harmonics. Impacts of the harmonics on power systems as well as methods to minimize and mitigate them will be discussed.

VFDs, additionally, generate harmonics on their output side which is connected to AC motors. Impacts of the harmonics on the motors will be covered. Different technologies and techniques that can help improving motor friendliness of VFDs will be introduced.

The tutorial will be useful for those who get involved with using and specifying AC motors, using and specifying VFDs and designing VFD-Motor-Load lineups.
