The Huntsville chapter of the IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Society invites you to attend a technical meeting on August 15, 2013.   The program will begin at 5:30 pm with Owen Wireman of Newtons 4th USA Inc. (N4L), sponsoring a free catered meal.   Tim Ardley’s talk will begin at approximately 6:20 pm after some short chapter status updates.

The presentation will first look at lightning and the level of current seen during a lightning strike.  Equipment is not normally designed to withstand a direct lightning strike, but most damage is caused by surge being induced on to the AC or communication ports for example. Where the equipment is deployed will largely dictate the expected levels of surge that can be seen by the equipment.

The presentation will look at the threat levels that can be seen to help in the design.  Copper communication lines that go external to the building are often protected by a primary protector where  these are normally gas discharge tube (GDT) primary protectors that is often rated up to 20kA.  Equipment often needs to have secondary protection that will reduce the let-through of the primary protector down to ensure sensitive IC’s are not damaged.  This presentation will look at how to ensure coordination between primary and secondary protection and various coordination elements that can be considered.

Tim Ardley is a Power Fault & Lightning Compliance Engineer at Adtran.  Previously, he was employed by Bourns Inc as the global reference design Manager and Senior telecom Field Applications Engineer.  Tim has also worked for Fairchild Semiconductor and Texas Instruments in the UK where he also earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Luton University in England.

The meeting will be held at ADTRAN in the North Tower, Bridge Training Room. The directions are included below. (follow the RED line on the map).

The meal and presentations are open to anyone interested in EMC: IEEE membership is not required to attend. Seating is limited to the first 100 people registered. You must Register at as soon as you can, but no later than 1:00 p.m. CST August 13, 2013. Note: If you are not an IEEE member or do not have your IEEE Membership Number please just leave that portion of the form blank.  Also, we really only need your name and email address; unfortunately, IEEE’s Vtools does not allow one to remove unrequired fields.

I hope to see you there!
