The Huntsville Chapter of the IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Society invites you to attend a Technical Meeting on September 21, 2017 featuring a talk given by Mr. Themis Chronis.  The program will begin at 5:30 pm with Robert Wood representing Voltage Multipliers Inc. / Millennium Sales Inc. sponsoring a free catered meal.  Mr. Chronis’s technical presentation will begin at approximately 6:20 pm after some short chapter status updates.

Synopsis: This presentation will provide the findings on lightning’s diurnal evolution on the global scale ceased to surprise the science community right after the beginning of 1900’s with the famous Carnegie cruise. These pioneering observations revealed a coherent thunderstorm diurnal behavior over the main convective chimneys (i.e. Africa, South America and the maritime continent e.g. South East Asia). Almost 100 year later, data from NASA’s Lightning Imaging Sensor reveal a novel diurnal behavior, this time from an energetic point of view. This behavior exhibits a noteworthy diurnal consistency which, with the help of ancillary observations and modeling, is attributed to the diurnal area extent variation of global thunderstorms.
