The Huntsville Chapter of the IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Society invites you to attend a Technical Meeting on August 15, 2019 featuring a talk given by Prof. Marcos Rubinstein of IEEE EMC DL.  The program will begin at 5:30 pm with Don Pralle of ARBrennan Associates sponsoring a free catered meal.  Prof. Rubinstein’s technical presentation will begin at approximately 6:20 pm after some short chapter status updates.

Synopsis:  

Lightning is one of the primary causes of damage and malfunction of telecommunication and power networks and one of the leading causes of weather-related deaths and injuries.

Lightning is composed of numerous physical processes, of which only a few are visible to the naked eye. Lightning measurements are important for protection, safety and research purposes.

This lecture presents various aspects of the lightning phenomenon, its main processes and the technologies that have been developed to assess its important parameters. These include the current, the associated electromagnetic fields, the optical properties, and high-energy radiation.

The measurements are intrinsically difficult due randomness of the phenomenon and to the harsh electromagnetic environment created by the lightning itself.

The meeting will be held at ADTRAN in the East Tower, 2nd Floor, FountainView Conference Room. The directions are included below (follow the Blue line on the map).
