I am glad to see that our editorial team has come up with a special edition covering two signature events of our IEEE Hyderabad Section. The events include the joint program of All India Student Project Contest (AISPC) & the Section Student Congress (SSC) and the Faraday Memorial Lecture (FML).
During the technical sessions of the Section Student Congress (SSC), I had an opportunity to address the students on “Thinking in Systems”. This is to drive the point home that we need to get adept at solving problems holistically than merely focusing on point solutions. The success in one’s career is not mere IQ but lot more right brain thinking. Throughout our education, we are conditioned to think only one right answer, but in life there is more than one right answer, in fact there are options. One’s success or failure or degree of progress depends on the right option chosen.
Section celebrated 20th Faraday memorial lecture by inviting an eminent speaker, Prof. Juan Manuel Martin- Sanchez, IEEE Fellow from Spain. His lecture on “Optimized adaptive control & industrial applications”, was conducted on 21 September, 2010 in Birla Science Centre, Hyderabad. Prof. Sanchez interacted with the audience and questions were well and fielded participant questions. Several of our Chapters are coming forward to establish annual memorial lectures. This year MTT/AP/EMC Joint Society Chapter launched its first Dr. Jagadish Chandra Bose Memorial Lecture, “Electromagnetic waves & Living Beings” on 30th November, 2010. This lecture was delivered by Dr. D.C. Pande, Director Technologies, LRDE, Bangalore at IETE Conference Hall.
This year our section proudly celebrated the IEEE Day on 7th October with a distinguished lecture by Dr. Viswanadham of ISB, Hyderabad, an IEEE Fellow. IEEE Day is a global event held on 7-8 October 2010, an event to celebrate everywhere around the world the achievements of IEEE members. The feedback that we received on the event is very encouraging. Some of the senior members of our section who completed 25+ years of membership were presented with special mementos on this eventful day.
Look forward to all your continued active participation and hope to meet you in our upcoming AGM.
Wishing you and your family happy and prosperous new year.

Greetings Members,
As the calendar year of 2010 comes to an end, the Editorial Board of Synapse would like to bring forth a Special Edition of Synapse. This issue focuses on the two major annual events organized by the IEEE Hyderabad Section viz, the All India Student Project Contest & the Section Student Congress (AISPC & SSC) and the Faraday Memorial Lecture (FML).
The first Section Student Congress was held in the year 2006 and ever since, IEEE Hyderabad Section is providing a platform exclusively for students from various colleges to meet, network, share thoughts and learn collectively the various aspects of science and technology, how to apply the text book theory to solve real-time problems and other know-hows. A session in the two day SSC is solely dedicated to the soft skills training, career development lectures, personality development session and other non-technical aspects that would help students become better engineers and better citizens. In the year 2007, IEEE Hyderabad Section in association with the IEEE India AES/Com/ LEO societies joint chapter organized an All India Student Project Contest (AISPC). The short-listed teams were invited to demonstrate their working models during the Section Student Congress that year. Ever since, it’s been a tradition to host the final round of demonstrations of the short-listed teams of AISPC during the SSC every year. The panel of judges for the AISPC consists of eminent and successful engineers and academia from the IEEE Hyderabad Section. The winners of the contest are given a cash prize up to INR 20,000/-. The deadline for the submission of the projects for the AISPC would be during the months of June or July every year. The exact deadline would be announced in flyers, the IEEE Hyderabad Section website (http://www.ieeehyd.org) and the newsletter Synapse.

Faraday Memorial Lecture is one of the two signature annual events of the IEEE Hyderabad Section, the other being IEEE Hyderabad Section AISPC & Section Student Congress. The Faraday Memorial Lecture is organized in September every year to commemorate the father of engineering, Michael Faraday’s birth anniversary. The first FML was held in the year 1991 and has been an integral part of the IEEE Hyderabad Section’s annual calendar ever since. It comprises of a lecture of duration 90 to 120mins by an expert in the fields of electrical engineering, electromagnetic field theory and compatibility, control and automation systems, etc.
The 20th Faraday Memorial Lecture was delivered by Prof. Juan Manuel Martin-Sanchez, IEEE Fellow, adaptive-predictive control expert from Spain. This lecture on “Optimized adaptive control & industrial applications”, was conducted on 21 September, 2010 in Birla Science Centre, Hyderabad. It started at 1800hrs and continued till 1930hrs. There were a lot of good queries from the audience that Prof. Sanchez answered after the lecture.
Prof. Sanchez started his lecture with history of industrial control and their basic concepts from manual control, automatic control (PID Controllers and Expert Systems) and then advanced control – Adaptive Predictive Control and adaptive predictive expert ADEX control. He discussed various aspects of control of PID controllers and their deficiencies and problems in tuning. He then explained the elements of an Adaptive Predictive Controller through a block diagram. He emphasized on the need for proper and simple control for energy conservation.
Later he discussed the concepts of predictive control and optimised control with its adaptation. Predictive Control is an advanced tool but it is incomplete. In order to deliver a complete solution, it needs an adaptive mechanism capable of adjusting the parameters of the predictive model when the process dynamics change. He also discussed about his US patent No 4,197,576 dated 8 Apr 1980 on adaptive-predictive control system.
A new control area of research by Prof. Sanchez called ADaptive predictive EXpert System – ADEX was discussed. He discussed the difference between the conventional control and ADEX control. ADEX Control was applied in over 150 industries so far for process control of cement, chemical, thermal power stations and air-conditioning plants for energy conservation. He explained a real life application of ADEX control to optimized temperature control in a coal-fired plant in Scotland and how it has improved the efficiency and reduced operating costs of the plant.
IEEE Hyderabad Section’s second annual signature event exclusively for students, the IEEE Hyderabad Section Student Congress 2010 was organized on 21st and 22nd August, 2010 at the IETE Mekaster Auditorium, OU Campus, Hyderabad. The two day event commenced with the inauguration ceremony at which Mr. Jayasimha, Chairman, Signionic Systems addressed the gathering of over 250 students representing around 25 IEEE Student Branches across the IEEE Hyderabad Section.
