Editor’s Message:
Greetings Members,
I am glad to bring out the third issue of Synapse 2011. This issue focuses on the events and news within the IEEE Hyderabad Section from 1st July, 2011 through 25th October, 2011. The IEEE Hyderabad, its affiliated Societies and Student Branches have been busy throughout organizing events to help its members stay updated with the technological advancements at the same time get a better understanding of the subject fundamentals.
Speaking of fundamentals, fundamentals have always intrigued me. No matter how many times we go over them, they always seem to tell us something new. As an old saying goes, the best place to look for solutions of a problem is where it all happened in the first place i.e., if anyone meets a dead-end at trying to solve a complex problem, the best way of approach is to break the ground-breaking, state-of-the-art, sophisticated problem statement into a collection of independent basic concepts and analyse each module building the problem statement all over from scratch again. Though the process is a bit of time consuming, but the results are guaranteed. I think I can safely say that experienced researchers, engineers and other professional would agree with me on this point.
Now, a few of our student members might be wondering about how to brush up the fundamentals apart from the regular textbooks and reference books that are prescribed by the university or preferred by their lecturers or peers. One ready solution is the internet. Though internet can be very good source information, it sometimes proves to be a herculean task of finding the appropriate and adequate information on the internet. Also, it might just be as similar of skimming through the textbooks with tons of questions and doubts and arguments popping up in our head with every paragraph we read or every video we watch. We may or may not find satisfactory answers to all of these popup questions by relying on the same source of information. The next possible source of information we might think of are the lectures, tutorials and workshops handled by experts in the field. A tutorial will help to clear most of the doubts that arise while reading a book or an article or watching a video lecture, as it provides an opportunity to communicate with the expert and present arguments which leads to a better understanding of the subject hence strengthening the fundamentals. Attending a workshop gives one a better edge as it enables the participant apply the fundamentals that he/ she learned to any real-time but simple problem statements resulting in similar but enhanced outcomes of improving the command on the subject.
The IEEE Hyderabad Section through the INDICON 2011 (16th – 18th December, 2011) is yet again providing this opportunity at a grand scale to all the aspiring student and established professional engineers to tend to their fundamentals enabling them to expand their reasoning and achieve wondrous results in their research works or their academic/ professional assignments. In INDICON 2011, apart from the forum to present and discuss innovations and on-going research works, a few tutorial and workshops are organized on topics from various fields of engineering such as the power electronics, data managements, software engineering, nanotechnology, System on Chip, Biotechnology, smart grid systems, etc. to name a few. The complete list and registrations for tutorials, workshops and special technical sessions can be found on the INDICON 2011 website.
Looking forward to see you all at INDICON 2011.
Regards,
S K Salankayana

“Engineering Sustainable Solutions”, INDICON 2011, the 2011 IEEE India conference in the making.
December 16 – 18, 2011
BITS-Pilani, Hyderabad
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the world’s largest scientific and technical society with a membership of around 400,000 members located in over 160 countries. IEEE celebrated its 125th year couple of years back all over the world. Outside United States, India is having the largest membership in IEEE. IEEE INDICON is a prestigious annual conference of the IEEE India Council that is being held since 2004. This year IEEE INDICON will be held in BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus from Dec 16-18, 2011, organized by IEEE Hyderabad Section which has more than 4000 members in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
INDICON covers the fields of Computer Sciences and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Life Sciences, Technology Management among other areas of discipline of the IEEE. The conference brings together researchers, academicians and professionals in the fields of engineering from all over India to share their original research work and contributions. The proceedings of the conference are published through the IEEE Xplore after the conference.
Communication through conversations is the current trend. When in August IEEE INDICON 2011 Face Book page was launched, the response from FB users was instantaneous and some of the comments that read on the page are
“awaiting to submitting my abstract” and “eagerly waiting for the conf.”.
INDICON 2011 released the call for papers on June 1 2011 and the news spread like wild fire and the INDICON 2011 FB page when launched saw comments like
“Is there any extension for the last date of submission? Please be informed earlier. I am keen about Indicon-2011.Thank you in advance.”
People started to get involved in submitting abstracts and asking questions on extension of deadlines. Soon after the deadline had expired few of the INDICON 2011 enthusiast commented
“Eagerly waiting for results” and “When will be the review results out??”
Soon INDICON 2011 released a teaser video on August 24.. On October 18 the results were released and the comments started flowing like
“I am so happy that my paper got selected in IEEE INDICON 2011 ….. I am so much eager to meet you all…. Congratulation to others whose paper got selected” and “Congrats to each and every one whose papers got selected for INDICON2011.. we will meet soon….. thanks to BITS Hyderabad.”
With the feedback results announced the participants were having a pleasant surprise to see a new look of the INDICON 2011 website which mirrored its theme “Engineering Sustainable Solutions”. October 26 INDICON site was opened for registrations for “authors only” and the users got more curious and the FB page was engaged with such discussions like
“ this is the 1st time am presenting a paper somewhere. Can someone please tell me the difference between a presentation session and a dialogue session. also if my paper is selected for a dialog session does it still get published?? ”- Keshad D.Malegam
for which an organizing committee member replied,
“Papers from BOTH sessions are accepted and will get the same space in the proceedings and IEEE Xplore. Generally what happens in a typical presentation session is that an author presents and the audience listens and session chair allows one or two questions at the end. Actually in dialogue session the presenter and the audience can initiate more dialogue based on mutual interest and it is not limited by the (artificial) time limit set by session chair”.
The activity continues on the FB page as the users were introduced to an innovative Social Engagement and Promotions Platform known as CubuuZZ, customised for Indicon and powered by Tata Consultancy Services Ltd., in late October.
Apart from conference presentations INDICON 2011 also has poster sessions and tutorials & workshops. The conference will also witness some of the eminent speakers for key note and plenary sessions and invited talks. Dr. Gordon Day, IEEE President-Elect, 2011 and 2012 IEEE Computer Society President, Mr. John Walz have consented to attend and participate in this program.
This conference is all set to be a place for networking platform for researchers as well as practioners in India. The conference also has a few cultural programs planned during its 3-day schedule.
To get the students more involved, the conference has launched a Video Contest. The theme of the video should match the Indicon 2011 conference theme “Engineering Sustainable Solutions”. The winners will be announced during Indicon 2011.
