Our Student Branch Chapter in collaboration with the Electrical Machines Laboratory, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering had the honor to organize a workshop by Mr. Lloyd, IAS President and Dr. Magyar Chapters and Membership Development Department Chair on:
“IAS overview” and “The electric car and the renewable energy sources – Hype or solution?”
During the first part of the workshop Mr. Lloyd informed us about IAS, the broad range of engineering that IAS covers, the members of IAS and the chapters and the financial sponsor while he was referred to the industrial and practical side of IAS in contrast with IEEE. Closing his lecture, Mr. Lloyd informed us about the standards maintained by IAS, the educational courses and the IAS publications.
At the second part of the workshop, Dr. Magyar informed us about the IEEE regions, the member and chapter distribution where we were able to see that about the 90% of student chapters is in regions 8-10. Moreover, Dr. Magyar explained us about the student activity and why this is important for the development of IEEE. Moving to the IAS student membership Dr. Magyar informed us about the development of IAS Chapters until 2013 and the chapters’ support that is provided by IAS. Closing his speech, Dr. Magyar explained us the importance of meetings and workshops and the reason why IAS is such an important society in IEEE.
The third part of the workshop was the presentation of the Chapter’s Awards. Our Chapter won three awards, the IEEE IAS Outstanding New Student Branch Chapter Award 2013, the 2013 IAS Chapter Web Contest 1st Prize Award and IEEE IAS Chapter Multicultural Contest 2012, 2nd Prize Award. Closing the third part of our workshop, we presented our chapter’s magazine (DIPLOMA) and we offered a printed version of it to Dr. Magyar and Mr. Lloyd.
During the last part of our workshop, Dr. Peter Magyar gave us some historical data about the electrical vehicles, the fuels that are used now and the energy storage capacity of them in relation with the lithium-ion batteries. Dr. Magyar presented the problems of liquid hydrocarbons, the oil consumption worldwide and its limits. Moreover, Dr. Magyar explained us what we want to achieve by using alternative engine powered vehicles and the potential energy carriers for transportation while he informed us that the electrical car has been more hype than a solution to the energy problems. He also referred to renewable energy sources such as Photovoltaic Parks and biofuel and the recent ideas for cars. Furthermore he explained us some of the lies about renewable energy sources and why today’s e-hybrid cars are not environmental friendly cars.
