Educational visit to the Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant of Thisavros*
On March 7th, 2014 the DUTh SB IAS Chapter organized an academic visit to the rockhill Dam and the Hydroelectric Power Plant of Thisavros* on Nestos river.
The Hydroelectric Power Plant of Thisavros is one of the 24 hydroelectric Power Plants in Greece and it is a part of Nestos complex. It is the tallest dam with high of 172 m/564 ft and the second largest reversible (pumped) power plant in Greece with installed capacity of 384 MW. The annual energy production of the power plant is of 440 GWh, while there are only 50 employees in the facilities.
During our visit we had the opportunity to learn both about the operation of the plant and the construction of the dam but also we had the chance to learn about the technical characteristics.
We were able to visit the underground station and the control room. Some of the employees guided the students to the facilities, explaining the principles of a Hydroelectric Power Plant and answering our questions. The stuff distributed leaflets about the technical characteristics of the facilities.
*The word “Thisavros” means “Treasure” in Greek!
