Industrial Visit to RYK Cogeneration Power Plant

Objective:   The core aim of the industrial visit is, aware the students about the industrial environment. As theoretical knowledge is not enough for making a good professional career such kind of technical visits help students to have extra information about what’s going on in an industry and how they run an organization. With an aim to go beyond academics, the industrial visit provides the student a practical perspective on the world of work.

Summary of The Event:

IEEE UCET IUB IAS (Industrial application Society) is one of the most active Chapters of IEEE Lahore section as well as Pakistan. It is promoting and working under the vision of IEEE IAS, providing the industrial linkage to the students for their future career.

On the 10th May 2018, IEEE IAS UCET IUB organized an industrial visit for Engineering Students. The visit was to the 30 MW RYK Cogeneration Power Plant, situated in RYK sugar mills Ltd, Janpur, Distt. Rahim Yar Khan.

The visit started in the early hours of a working day. The group was taken to the training hall first and foremost as soon as reaching the plant. Before the Plant visit, Descon management team gives a presentation on plant working, safety and served the students with refreshment. Within the industry premises Engr. Mian Muhammad Hassain (Plant Operation Manager) took charge and had taken the group to the plant around noon and briefed up with the introduction of the plant as well as the number of production lines. He also mentioned about every activity happening in the plant and also answered the queries of the students regarding power generation.

Bagasse is often used as a primary fuel source for sugar mills. When burned in quantity, it produces sufficient heat energy to supply all the needs of a typical sugar mill, with energy to spare. To this end, a secondary use for this waste product is in cogeneration, the use of a fuel source to provide both heat energy, in the mill, and electricity, which is typically sold on to the consumer electrical grid.

The control room was based on latest technology DCS (A distributed control system is a control system for a process of the plant). The visit concluded by the afternoon. The industrial visit to RYK Cogeneration Power Plant was an enriching experience for students in getting live exposure of power generation which can help them in their internships and further career enhancements.
