Day 3: Talk on 5G, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and IAS Meetup

Enriched in mind and spirit after the industrial visit as well as the fun-filled cultural evening on the previous day, the day began with a lecture by the distinguished Prof S L Maskara(Retd), IIT Kharagpur at 9 AM, researching in Wireless and Mobile Communications, Spread Spectrum Techniques, Code Division Multiple Access, Error Control Coding and Telecommunication Networks. He spoke at length about 5G technology, the major buzzword in Communication Technology these days.

Prof. Maskara deliberated on the delay of mobile communication, due to unavailability of EM spectrum. Every new technology arriving in the market that is an improvement of previously used versions is called a generation. There was further discussion on how 3G, whilst being functional was slowly getting obsolete for the fast world and the impending need to transit to 5G. “Tech pushes itself”, was one of the principal ideas of the session.

This session was found to be among the liveliest of all the sessions conducted so far, with the students actively asking doubts and the speaker replying with the same spirit. This enriching session was followed by High Tea, refreshing as the day before.

Next was the talk on Machine Learning, one of the most anticipated and awaited topics of Tachyon ’19, by Dr. Nitendra Rajput, Executive Vice President and Head of Data Science at Info Edge, leading the data science work for various Info Edge businesses such as Naukri, Jeevansathi, 99acres. The speaker started off with a correlation between human psychology and deep learning. He further explained that the human brain had two systems:

  1. System 1: effortless,data-driven,probabilistic,spontaneous( main system)
  2. System 2: lazy, method-driven, deterministic, needs a trigger

AI refers to the ability of the machine to learn on its own. In technical terms, when the machine can determine the optimal way to look at data provided, it becomes intelligent. The primary method to initiate Artificial Intelligence is to feed large amounts of data to the machine and observe the decisions the machine takes, and train it accordingly.

According to Mr. Rajput, AI is fueled by ML and ML by deep learning. The challenge is now, to encapsulate human emotion in inanimate websites.

This enriching talk, ending at 1:15, was followed by a session of lunch at the DA-IICT cafeteria, where the participants interacted among themselves and with the speakers. Post lunch was the IAS Meetup.

The final session was taken by Prof. Sourish Dasgupta, co-founder of Raxter.io, on Artificial Intelligence, its challenges, and implications. There was a discussion on the concepts of consciousness and rationality- a journey of how a piece of code becomes intelligent. The session also ended with a lot of questions and discussion on projects undertaken by the participants and the future of AI.

To freshen up the participants after the talks, there was organized a GK based fun quiz by the Organising Committee which was hosted on the online platform Kahoot, by Anurag Fichadiya, Treasurer, IEEE IAS SB DA-IICT. This was a very enjoyable session to stretch the brain synapses. The winners of this quiz were given IEEE t-shirts.
