The IEEE IAS Student Branch chapter of DA-IICT has always been encouraging the student community to participate in more research and Industrial Application activities. This year, from the ‘Scholarship Fund’, the student branch chapter is glad to announce scholarship award to a postgraduate researcher at DA-IICT, Ami Pandat who was able to publish her paper in WIECON 2018 conference. Sensors Council has been spearheading a unique project of capturing all the oral presentations delivered during SENSORS conference since 2012. IEEE IAS DA-IICT SBC student volunteers have been involved in the video production of all these recordings done on-site in the conference for the last two years, 2017 & 2018. Continue reading Video Production for SENSORS Conference
SENSORS has been one of the active members of Industry Applications Society. And in collaboration with IEEE SENSORS Gujarat Section, our chapter is proud to say that our project on spreading sensors awareness among pre-university kids has been recognized as the educational initiative of the Council. It is so far fully funded by the Council. Continue reading MYOSA: An educational Initiative
The annual farewell meet of IEEE Student Branch DA-IICT was organized on November 1, 2018, at Lecture Theatre 3. It was attended by members of IEEE team, IAS team and WIE team of DAIICT. The meet marked the end of a tenure filled with fun and learning as the present core members of the Executive Committee signed off from their positions and the newly selected core members of the Executive Committee were officially vested with their powers and positions. It was a defining moment for all the members of the IEEE Student Branch DA-IICT as the young leaders took the mantle of responsibility and pledged to devote themselves to the duties and the Student Branch. This year, the IEEE Student Branch DA-IICT observed the greatest number of students registering for the membership of IEEE and taking interest in various events organized by the Student Branch. We have a whopping 160 students enrolled as members and actively participating in the events, and even conducting them. Each one of them has been a part of either of the Special Interest Groups, IAS or MTTS society or WIE affinity group of IEEE and has contributed to what IEEE DA-IICT is today. To acknowledge their efforts and to get more students involved with IEEE, IEEE printed T-shirts were distributed to all on November 1, 2018. IEEE IAS DAIICT Student Branch Chapter organized a visit to the Akshaya Patra Foundation on 27th October 2018. It is a non-profit organization in India that runs the school lunch programme across India. Akshaya Patra was established in 2000. It has its kitchens in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Chattisgarh and many places in India. It has its largest kitchen in Bangalore and the second largest in Ahmedabad. Due to the incapability of accommodating more students at a time in the kitchen area, only 10 students were invited for the visit. Continue reading A visit to Akshaya Patra Foundation
Session 4 and Session 5: Mathematical discussions
IEEE MI-SIG in association with IEEE IAS DAIICT Student Branch Chapter also conducted in between a few discussion sessions on linear regression, logistic regression, support vector machines, basics of natural language processing and Naive Naive Bayes Classifier. The sessions were held on 25th September 2018 and 23rd October 2018. These topics were covered in a span of two sessions. The students were first asked to come up and explain whatever they knew about the topic on the whiteboard. Following this, the mentors came up one by one on the whiteboard and explained the concepts in great detail. They taught the students all the heavy mathematics that was involved in it. Session 3: Prototype Presentations
In the duration of two weeks, all the mentors actively helped the students with their doubts on the online platform Slack. Many students were stuck in between but all the resources and guidance helped them proceed ahead. After such help sessions, IEEE MI-SIG conducted a prototype presentation on 3rd October 2018 wherein the students had to discuss their progress so far. The students were supposed to have completed building at least a naive model for their project. This presentation session was open to general students as well so that good questions can be brought up. The students presenting their prototypes were asked many questions and were given many suggestions by the mentors as well. Their presentation echoed their efforts very well. It was a productive as well as competitive atmosphere.

Session 2 of the Fall Semester:
The next session of IEEE MI-SIG in association with IEEE IAS DAIICT Student Branch Chapter was conducted on 15th September 2018. In our last session, we had given out google forms to fill in by the students who were interested in joining the growing community and getting involved in semester-long projects and insightful discussions. Out of nearly 50 received forms, IEEE MISIG selected 24 enthusiastic and promising members to work on projects throughout the semester. On their first meet with the selected students, general project ideas were discussed in various domains like Time-series Analysis, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, reinforcement learning and so on. The students were asked to brainstorm a few ideas and decide upon a project idea which has enough resources available on the internet to refer to. It was a good discussion and many substantial topics were discussed upon.
Some seniors talked about their past projects in various domains. They thoroughly explained the need for mathematics for understanding the topics of machine learning in depth. A few advises were given out to the students regarding how to approach a machine learning problem. In the end, the students networked amongst themselves and discussed possible project topics they had in their mind.
IEEE IAS DA-IICT Student Branch Chapter organized a Webinar Screening session on 10th October 2018. IEEE IAS conducts webinar series on interesting emerging topics all throughout the year which are available to all IAS members for free. It is available to other students for a fee of $10-20. To ensure that all the students can avail to these resourceful webinars, IEEE IAS DA-IICT organized this short one-hour session where one of the top webinars was screened for students, completely free of cost.
