Webinar on “From University to the Automotive Industry- Motor Modelling and Design”

On July 27th, 2017, Democritus University of Thrace SB IAS Chapter organized a Webinar through WebEx about modeling and design of electric motors, which was conducted by Konstantinos Bourchas. Konstantinos was born in Athens in 1989, get his degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from National Technical University of Athens and continued with MSc studies on electrical power systems at KTH in Stockholm, Sweden. From September 2015 his is working as engine design engineer at Tesla Motors in California. His research interests include losses on electric motors and modeling and design of electrical motors. Tesla Motors is an American automotive industry, which designs, produces and sells electric cars and is located in California, USA.

At the beginning of the lecture, the specialist on electric motors presented a short bio, spoke about his interest in electrical motors and automotive applications during university and how he started to work on the field of electric motor design. Later, during the lecture he spoke about the motors in general, the process Tesla follows to complete its products production and his contribution to this process. Moreover, Konstantinos mentioned the perspectives that someone has after getting the degree in Electrical Engineering and what kind of qualifications someone needs to claim a job at a multinational and recognized company like Tesla. Some of that demands are hard work, perseverance, and passion for your object of interest. In the end, he answered our questions about his career and anything was incomprehensible.

DUTh SBC: 2017 Annual Presentation

On Thursday 12th of October, our team organized a presentation of our IAS Student Branch Chapter as we are used to doing every year at the beginning of the new semester. The main purpose of this presentation is to inform the freshmen of Democritus University of Thrace about our society and give them the opportunity to participate in our actions. In the beginning, our Chapter’s advisor Prof Athanasios Karlis spoke about IAS and the opportunities it offers to its active members and the contests and conferences someone can attend.

After that, our Chapter’s Chair highlighted our SBC’s accomplishments through the past year, including academic visits to local industries, lectures by distinguished speakers, workshops, magazine DIPLOMA, website and social events. Of course, she did not forget to mention the future actions we are planning to pull off. During the presentation, IEEE Student Branch of Thrace presented its actions, as well as. The representative introduced their activities, in order to attract new members to volunteer.

The guest speaker was Mr. Therapon Fakas, life and business coach and graduate of our University who take action on construction of public projects and is a passionate supporter of the perception that every challenge is a chance. The purpose of the speech was to put his ideas across self-improvement and evolution to the audience, through examples from everyday life. The presentation was ended with the motto “Non-obstacle is larger than your own faith”.

Academic Visit to Steam Power Station of Komotini

On Thursday 2nd of November, IAS Democritus University of Thrace SBC conducted an educational trip to the Steam Power Station of Komotini. The factory is under maintenance from May of the same year, which is scheduled to be completed in December.

The combined cycle power plant, with total power rising up to 476MW, consists of three synchronous three-phase generators [15.6kV], which are powered by two gas turbines and a steam turbine, respectively. The station uses oil as a backup fuel for emergency purposes.

The main function of the unit is done in a closed circle, while there is a possibility to operate in an open circle.

This station operates as a regulator of the grid and supports its stability, because of the system’s speed integration to the high-voltage grid, which is an advantage. The decision of the load, which will be assumed from the station, is taken from the Load Distribution Center in Athens.

During our guided tour in the factory, the function of such a unit was explained to us.

At first, we visited the control room, where there is a total supervision of the whole station. Then, we went to the cooling tower, which converts the steam entering into the water, because of its opposite movement in relation to the atmospheric air.

Also, we saw the place where the gas turbine is located and the responsible engineer explain to us in detail, the parts of the turbine and how it works.

In the end, we visited the generator, where the main part of the maintenance takes place. More specifically, a team of engineers replaces the windings of the generator’s stator, while at the same time they check the rotor too.

It is worth mentioning, that as the natural gas is a noble gas, no sulfur is emitted into the atmosphere and it does not burden the environment a lot.
