IEEE P11:  Rotating Electric Machinery for Rail and Road Vehicles

IEEE-11 is up for revision and update, and a working group has been set up. The PAR was officially approved March 2015 The IEEE-11 standard was first developed when the only traction motors where large DC or induction machines for trains and ships, and significant work is needed to include smaller automotive motors, as well as permanent magnet machines. The Electric Machines Committee and the Transportation Systems Committees of the IAS and the Electric Motor Subcommittee of PES are the technical committees with interest in the standard and members of these technical committees have been working to develop the standard. The project is co-sponsored by IAS and PES. The working group has been holding teleconferences and revising the draft. –  IEEE  Std. 112: Test Standard for Polyphase Induction Machines

This standard was approved in December 2017 and published in February 2018.  It is sponsored by the Power & Energy Society with significant input from members of IPCSD, particularly the Electric Machines committee.


IEEE Std. 114:  Test Standard for Single-Phase Induction Machines

This standard was published in December 2010 and is currently active.


IEEE Std. 1662™-2016 (Revision of IEEE Std 1662-2008): IEEE Recommended Practice for the Design and Application of Power Electronics in Electrical Power Systems

The purpose of this document is to recommend a methodology for analysis and specifications parameters of power-electronics (PE) equipment for electrical power systems.  It summarizes current electrical engineering methods and design practices for applying power electronics in electrical power distribution and conversion systems from a common frame of reference for reliable integrated electrical power systems. It recommends PE equipment requirements, necessary power system analytical studies, PE design analysis and testing, and certification and inspection procedures.  It was published in March 2017.

IEEE Std. 1709™-2018 (Revision of IEEE Std 1709-2010): IEEE Recommended Practice for 1 kV to 35 kV Medium-Voltage DC Power Systems on Ships

Guidelines to specify, procure, design, manufacture and develop manuals, safety procedures, practices and procedures for effective maintenance of medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) electrical power systems is discussed in this recommended practice. Recommendations are made for analytical methods, preferred interconnection interfaces and performance characteristics for reliable integration of MVDC electrical components into the ship MVDC electrical power systems.  It was published in November 2010.

IEEE Std. 1812:  Trial Use Guide for Testing PM Machines

The Electric Machines Committees of IAS and PES have collaborated to develop a new permanent magnet (PM) machine test standard. It covers areas such as condition and integrity tests, steady-state and transient tests, losses and efficiency determination and machine operating characteristics. The standard is applicable to a wide range of PM machine sizes and various applications. A copy can be obtained from the IEEE Standards Association website at this link.

The IEEE Std. 1812, co-sponsored 50-50 by IAS and PES, was published in February 2014 as a trial–use standard. Trial-use standards have a validity of two years (recently changed to 3 years for future standards). After the validity period, it has to be revised and affirmed as a substantive standard or it would be discarded if there is no interest in it (or if there are too many flaws to justify its existence). Accordingly, the working group has been reconvened and PAR was approved September 2016. The working group has been working on a revision/expansion of the standard to include other areas that were not covered under the initial project. In particular, machines such as line-start permanent magnet machines were excluded from the trial use version and are now being considered. Also, parameter determination and measurement of inductances are topics that are being discussed in the current revision.

The WG chair for the revision is Prof. Dan Ionel at IAS members with an interest in permanent magnet machines are invited to review the IEEE 1812 standard and provide input for the revision. The Working Group is:

1) requesting feedback on the published standard, its usefulness, validation and extension.

2) soliciting comments and contributions to add test methods for parameters determination for machine characteristics for control and other applications.

3) soliciting papers on PM machine testing, for presentation in future IAS and PES conferences. These papers will form the material to draw from to develop the standard further.

IEEE P2004:  Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Simulation Based Testing of Electric Power Apparatus and Controls

A recently initiated project to develop a Recommended Practice for hardware-in-the-loop simulation could be of interest to the broad IAS membership. This recommended practice provides established practices for the use of the method of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) Simulation based Testing of Electric Power Apparatus and Controls. It is intended to be generically applicable in synergy (in conjunction) with any specific testing standard (if applicable). The PAR for the project was approved in March 2017 and development is currently underway. The WG Chair is Mischa Steurer at: The project is jointly sponsored by PELS, IES and IAS.


IEEE SCC21:  Standards Coordinating Committee on Fuel Cells, Photovoltaics, Dispersed Generation, and Energy Storage

IAS members are involved in this Standards Coordinating Committee, involving several IEEE Societies. SCCs are formed when the scope is too broad to be encompassed in a single society. SCC21 has been in operation since 1981 and oversees the development of standards in the areas of fuel cells, photovoltaics (PV), dispersed generation, and energy storage and coordinates efforts in these fields among the various IEEE Societies and other affected organizations to ensure that all standards are consistent and properly reflect the views of all applicable disciplines.

Industrial Drives: New standard activities

The Industrial Drives Committee of IAS has recently formed a Standards subcommittee.  The goal of the Standards sub-committee of the IEEE Industrial Drives group is to participate in the development of Standards and/or Practices pertaining to electric drive systems.  Electric drive systems include but are not limited to all types of electrical motors and drives that are used for controlling torque and speed of said electrical motors.  Participation is not limited to co-operating with other Standards groups or organizations within the IEEE and/or other technical bodies of the world but also includes taking a leading role in formulating new standards to facilitate meaningful applications of said standards in the industrial and commercial workplace.

Motor Drive System Efficiency is the first topic that was chosen to be pursued by the IEEE Industrial Drives Committee’s (IDC’s) Standards subcommittee.  At first, existing standards on Motor and Drive Efficiency is being studied.  This includes European Norms (EN series of standards), Air conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) standard, and existing Canadian Standards.  Since the European standards deal mainly with motors suitable for European application where the voltages are typically 400V and the supply frequency is 50 Hz, there is a need to develop a more global standard geared to satisfy all parts of the world.  In addition, most standards presently available concentrate on power measurement and not energy measurement.  By bringing measurement of energy (Power x Time), the IDC Standards subcommittee intends to add more meaning to the measurement and application of Motor-Drive Systems standards.
