Abstract
The penetration of weather-dependent renewable power (wind and solar) is rapidly increasing worldwide. Managing the integration of such new capacity, characterized by high variability and low system inertia, is challenging at many levels both in terms of planning and operating systems. With the increase in wind farm capacity and energy outputs, coordinated scheduling and dispatch of wind generation along with conventional generation is necessary to ensure continued grid reliability. This requires operational foresight and flexibility. Operational foresight is obtained from real-time monitoring of wind farm outputs combined with short-term production forecasting based on numerical weather prediction, while flexibility stems from wind farm control that enables both active power steering and enables ancillary grid services. This tutorial will investigate these challenges from the perspective of wind farm operators, grid system operators, and power market operators.

Robust communication with and structured data acquisition from wind farms is a key prerequisite of any Wind Energy Management Systems (WEMS). The real-time data feeds from wind turbines and weather mode driven production forecasting can be aggregated at wind farm, regional, or national levels based on market structure design. WEMS includes wind forecasting engines that will forecast wind generation for the relevant control areas with short to medium time horizon (hours to days ahead), in order to optimize power production and limit deviation from production schedules determined from day-ahead markets. From a system perspective, WEMS feeds updated wind generation schedules to Load Dispatch Centers for coordination with other generation schedules, which helps reduce the need for spinning reserves. System operators can then dynamically schedule the other types of generation to respond to changes in wind generation forecasts. This tutorial aims at describing WEMS concepts design, hardware and software implementation.

Speaker’s Bio

Dr. Jens I. Madsen is a Senior Specialist at the Suzlon Blade Science Center in Vejle, Denmark.  Suzlon Energy Ltd. is a renewable solutions provider with a global presence in 18 countries across 6 continents. The company is headquartered in Pune, India and has installed more than 17 GW of wind turbine capacity.  From 2008 to 2016, Dr. Madsen was Head of Wind Power R&D at the utility company Vattenfall, which is one of the largest owners and operators of wind power in Europe. In recent years, his research interests have included smart use of weather forecasting, wind farm control, and wind resource assessment in complex and forested terrain.

Dr. Madsen holds a Ph.D. degree (1998) in Mechanical Engineering from Aalborg University (Denmark) and an MBA degree (2014) from Aarhus University (Denmark). He is an active participant in various national and international R&D consortia and programmes aimed at lowering the cost of wind power.
