We are looking for candidates with a strong research potential, interested in investigating thermometry and predictive mathematical models of biomedical phenomena.
The research activities defined by the LASER OPTIMAL project focus on the development of a technological platform for laser ablation in cancer treatment, and in particular: physical simulations for treatment settings planning, nanoparticles-mediated laser ablation to improve the treatment selectivity, real-time monitoring of the thermal effects, intra-operative adjustment of the pre-planned settings.

Candidates requirements

Profile 1

Particular attention will be paid to candidates who already have some experience working on one or more of the following topics: optical-thermal response of laser irradiated tissue, thermal measurements, design and manufacturing of fiber optic based sensors for biomedical applications (e.g., fiber Bragg gratings), laser systems, signal processing.

  • Ph.D. in Biomedical/Mechanical/Electronic Engineering, Physics, and related disciplines
  • interest in the aspects of temperature measurement for biomedical purposes, and in design, development, and characterization of measuring systems

Profile 2

Particular attention will be paid to candidates who already have some experience working on one or more of the following topics: heat transfer modeling in biological tissue, optical-thermal response of laser irradiated tissue, medical image processing (e.g., MRI, CT), software development for real-time physics simulation of the human body, computer science for medical applications.

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, and related disciplines
  • interest in the aspects of physical modeling for biomedical purposes, and in biomedical imaging

For both the profiles, the following features are highly desired:

  • working knowledge of Matlab
  • demonstrated record of relevant experience with the publications and training
  • fluent English (spoken and written)
  • experience in lab management (e.g., quotation inquiry, negotiation with suppliers) will be also positively considered

Contract details

The successful candidates will join the research unit “Mechanical and Thermal Measurements” at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Politecnico di Milano (PoliMi). PoliMi provides excellent research conditions, in a quiet environment inside the active Milan region: in the QS ranking by subject PoliMi is the first Italian University in several research areas (Including Mechanical Engineering), among the first 6 European Universities in Europe and among the first 20 all over the world.
The postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to attend and present research results in conferences and symposia, to collaborate with national and international partners (in France and United States) and to visit their laboratories. The monthly net salary is approx. 1,800 €, and can be adjusted in function of the experience.
Applications should be sent by email (all documents in English) to the contact below, and include:

  • the CV
  • the list of publications and oral communications
  • the motivation letter (max 1 page)
  • the summary of the previous research (max 2 pages)
  • contact details for two references

Job Position 3

Research grants at University of Verona in development of wearable devices

Contracts duration: 1 year with possible future positions in industry.

Description

Applicants are invited for a research grant at the Department of Computer Science of  University of Verona beginning June 2018, to be funded by two private companies named Wagoo LLC and Wagoo Italia srls (www.wagooar.com).

Augmented reality technologies for eyewear and other wearable devices have traditionally required significant computational power to function. This comes as no surprise as positioning, connectivity, orientation, direction, and image capture (and recognition) technologies all serve to drain batteries more quickly. As such, processing and power constraints lead to larger form factors as well as more frequent recharging cycles. A solution has been validated using Wagoo LLC ’s patented, multi-antenna eyewear system, having 3 or more integrated antennas. In such a system, users can more efficiently locate nearby objects of interest (e.g. people via Bluetooth enabled smartphones or objects via iBeacon technology). This solution, is based on common radio emission modules such as Bluetooth Low Energy, and consequently  requires less hardware, connectivity, and power.

We are looking for passionate and eclectic people with a hunch for pushing the frontiers of  cutting edge technologies beyond the status quo. We need people who want to grow quickly and are not scared of tackling new problems with creativity, determination, and a constant learning attitude.

Candidates requirements

We require a general knowledge of as many of these areas: C based programming, Objects-Oriented Programming, Concurrent Programming, Operating Systems, Data Networks, Wireless Networks, Microcontroller Programming, Low Power Firmware, Sensors and Radio Interfaces, Bluetooth Radio Standard.

Profile 1: embedded systems

Development & optimization of smart embedded system including network firmware, CPU, memory, bus, Bluetooth Low Energy RX-TX, Power Supply, Antennas & RF Components.

Topics:  Embedded Programming, Electronic Systems Design, RF Propagation.

Profile 2: data algorithms

Development & optimization of algorithms for auto-calibration. Development & optimization of algorithms for directional navigation in iBeacon-equipped environments.

Topics:  Statistical Analysis, Machine Learning, System and Control Theory, BFS  and Graph Theory.

Profile 3: web applications

Development & optimization of end-to-end mobile app. for wearable devices and integration with social networks.

Topics:  iOS and Android programming both native and hybrid, JavaScript, JSON, No-SQL Databases & REST.

Contract details

The successful candidates will join the Department of Computer Science of University of Verona. They will have the opportunity to collaborate with national and international partners from both academia and industry.

Applications should be sent by email (all documents in English) to the contact below, and include:

  • the CV with a summary of the previous activity in either research or development
