Message from the Chair’s desk

The IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (IEEE-GRSS)  Kolkata Chapter has been growing since its inception  on September 19, 2012. Demographically this chapter covers 13 states in the eastern and north-eastern parts of India. This chapter has been focusing on connecting its members to the experts from academia and industry through organising various lectures, seminars, workshops, national and international conferences, distinguished lectures, and education and outreach activities.

Specifically, this chapter has taken proactive steps to involve domain experts across the world through the Chap-Net, ProjNet and Data Curation program since 2017, and also striving to organize the same during this challenging time of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over the past years, several distinguished lecturer programs have been organised under the aegis of GRSS Kolkata Chapter. The chapter promotes student involvement by organising various competetive events for students and young professionals. The student community is largely benefited by the three student chapters, one at Sikkim and two at Kolkata, which are mentored by the faculty members. The student chapters also organize different lectures, seminars through out the year.

Because of these proactive measures, in the year 2019, this chapter bagged the Chapter Excellence Award, whereas the Chapter Leadership Award was awarded to the former Chair Prof. Ashish Ghosh. The chapter also features in the promotional video of IEEE GRSS Youtube Channel.

In order to be proactive even during this COVID-19 pandemic period, a series of online workshops, seminars, distinguished lectures and popular talks have been conducted in the year 2020 and 2021, including the IEEE GRSS Workshop on Spatial Geoinformatics using Machine Learning Approaches 2021 (SGiML) conducted in the month of September 2021.  All the above activities could be possible due to the active support of our vice-chairs, executive committee members and all enthusiastic members and participants.

I wish all the members to be actively involved with different activities and hope that this chapter will further excel to carve a niche in the international domain.

Stay safe and stay well.

Prof. Ashish Ghosh
