Title: Improving your Technical Writing

Abstract: It is ironic that many bemoan the inability of scientists and engineers to write well, yet little attention is paid to teaching how to write technical papers in college or grad school. Writing is a skill and can be mastered. Good writing is indeed hard work and time consuming, but in the end, can be very rewarding.

I will present some guidance on improving your technical writing, discuss some approaches to overcoming writer’s block, list some common mistakes that should be avoided and offer numerous references, which can provide answers to questions as they come up.

Background: Ken Hanson worked at LANL roughly 35 years, has written over 160 articles, helped organize numerous conferences, especially the SPIE Medical Imaging Symposiums. Presently consults with EES-17 on Breast Ultrasound Tomography and teaches a short course on Writing for Publication in Medical Imaging at the annual SPIE MI Symposium.
