Abstract: All power-electronics systems (PESs) comprise solid-state semiconductor devices that enable switchable control of power flow and hence PES dynamics exhibit discontinuous and hybrid nonlinear dynamics that evolve on multiple scales. Yet, the conventional approach for analysis and control design of PESs is primarily based on averaged-modeling approach that ignores the multi-scale dynamics of the PESs. This presentation provides a fundamentally different perspective to the control of solid-state semiconductor-device-based switching PESs. It is based on controlling the time evolution of the feasible switching sequences and controlling the switching transitions of PESs. The switching-sequence-based control (SBC) – yields rapid response under transient condition, optimal equilibrium response, and yields seamless transition between the two dynamical modes. This presentation will provide the mechanism to carry out SBC synthesis and how it leads to multi-scale optimality. Subsequent to the outline of SBC, the presentation will focus on switching-transition control (STC). This presentation will demonstrate, along with results, multiple practical application scenarios where the radically new control concepts make a tangible and substantive difference.

Short Bio:Dr. Sudip K. Mazumder received his Ph.D. degree from Virginia Tech and MS degree from RPI in 2001 and 1993, respectively. He is the Director of Laboratory for Energy and Switching-Electronics Systems and a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, Chicago. Dr. Mazumder also serves as the President of NextWatt LLC, a small business organization that he setup in 2008. He has over 24 years of professional experience and has held R&D and design positions in leading industrial organizations and has served as Technical Consultant for several industries. His current areas of interests are switching-sequence and switching-transition based control of power-electronics systems and interactive-power networks; power electronics for renewable energy, micro/smart grids, energy storage; Wide-bandgap (GaN/SiC) power electronics; and optically-triggered wide-bandgap power semiconductor devices. His research has attracted over 40 sponsored-research projects from leading federal agencies and industries, and yielded close to 200 peer-reviewed publications in prestigious tier-one international journals and conferences, 8 patents, 10 book chapters and 1 (pending) book, and over 70 invited/plenary/keynote lectures and presentations. Dr. Mazumder is the Chair for IEEE Power Electronics Society Technical Committee on Sustainable Energy Systems since 2015. He also serves as the Co-Chair for IEEE Power Electronics Society Subcommittees on Distributed Generation and Renewable Energy and Power Semiconductors, and as a Committee Member for IEEE PELS Standards Subcommittee.
