This information session was aimed at informing the South Florida community of Nuclear Power and its processes in contributing to sustainable and renewable sources in the energy industry and demonstrates how nuclear plants can be used in this movement. All states in the nation have set goals for their energy consumption in the future. Most states have set a “25% renewable by 2025”goal.

Nuclear science and technology, with its many applications from the creation of medical isotopes and power to water desalination and food irradiation, can help solve a variety of issues that our global society faces. And they need answers now. They need us to engineer solutions and products to solve many complex issues, develop innovative maintenance and project management practices, and safely and reliably generate clean electricity for all. They need us to leverage what our generation does best, a keen ability to incorporate technology into our work and life, shared and collaborative learning from each other, and an unrelenting drive to succeed.

The soft magnetic underlayer (SUL) plays an important role in perpendicular magnetic recording because of its strong interaction with the single-pole-type (SPT) head. The SUL will be as essential in next generation recording schemes as it is in current systems. For the writing process, it has been thought that thick, high saturation magnetization flux density (Bs) materials are suitable for the SUL, while thinner, moderate Bs is preferable for fabrication. In this presentation, we use Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert micromagnetic models to analyze the head field distribution and high-frequency response of the SPT head for various SUL thicknesses and Bs. The responses of head field and magnetizations and SUL magnetizations are investigated for various current amplitudes with and without antiferromagnetic coupling (AFC), which is essential in real drives to reduce SUL noise from domain walls.
