IEEE Young Professionals Nigeria organized its first meet up as part of a proposed series of meet-up events within the next 1 month. The maiden event was hosted at Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Headquarters Office, Abuja. The meeting which began at about 12:30 pm had 11 participants from different organizations and tertiary institutions.
The meet up began with an opening prayer by Miss Mistura (VP, IEEE YP Nigeria Section). After the opening prayer, there was a teaser whereby each participant introduced themselves and impacts made within the year.
Mr. Gana Haruna, YP Chair in his opening remark while acknowledging participant’s interest in social impact development, equally used it as an opportunity to inform participants on upcoming events and numerous opportunities that abound within IEEE.
The guest speaker, Mr. Tomiwa, spoke on renewable energy and how participants could use it to provide alternative energy for Nigerians in rural and underserved communities. His exciting presentation led to an interactive session, that saw participants discuss the history of solar power in Nigeria and the latest renewable technologies that can be deployed to underserved communities.
The next speaker, a respected IEEE member in Nigeria, Engr. John Funsho Adebayor spoke on three main characteristics youths in Nigeria must imbibe for their passion to produce its desired results. Addressing the theme of the meet-up; Lazy Youths: The role of IEEE YP, Engr. John spoke on the topic Grit, Grind and Guts: Impactful 3G’s.
He shared his personal experience on his professional journey alongside its tough challenges and how determination culminated to him effectively serving IEEE in various capacities over the last 25yrs. It was a motivational and inspiring presentation that left most participants encouraged to stay focused on their impact-driven goals in spite of enormous challenges in Nigeria.
An interactive session saw participants pledging commitment to sustain and initiate new social-driven projects that advance humanity in underserved communities.
The theme of these meet-up Lazy Youths: The role of IEEE YP was chosen because of the massive outcry following Mr. President’s remark about Nigerian youth being lazy. Young professionals Nigeria section felt that President Buhari’s remarks were untrue and misguided. As part of human capacity and empowerment goals by this new administration, YP decided to organize events to prove that Nigerian youths are not lazy but don’t have opportunities to showcase their talents.
Snacks and drinks were served to participants as refreshments during the networking session. Afterward, there was a group photograph.
The meeting was drawn to a close by 2:30 pm with a closing prayer by Mr. Okafor Chukwuemeka, YP Secretary.
