Real-Time Thermal Ratings of Transmission and Distribution Systems

2018-04-27 @ 15:00 - 16:30

Real-time thermal rating is a smart grid technology that can significantly improve the utilization of existing transmission and distribution systems infrastructure by allowing the ratings of electrical conductors and equipment to be increased based on real-time weather information. Application of RTTR in a power system cannot only facilitate increased penetration of renewables in a power system but can also assist in ensuring its safer operation. In this regard, this seminar will present the fundamentals of RTTR as well as different ways of evaluating RTTR. Due to the growing importance of RTTR for future smart grids, its suitable modeling becomes crucial in identifying the actual benefits derived from this technology. In this regard, this seminar will discuss the existing research on modeling RTTR for power systems. Finally, some key findings on the benefits of RTTR in transmission expansion planning will be presented.
