Chair’s Message

January 28, 2018

On behalf of the Northern Virginia Section, Greetings and Happy 2018!  I hope you’ve enjoyed a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones.  I extend a heartfelt appreciation to our volunteers for their continued dedication to serve our members and communities, especially in light of the extraordinary wintry weather bestowed upon the National Capital Area this winter.

I especially want to thank the 2017 Section and Chapter Executive Committee members for their service and all the volunteers that supported them.  I want to also congratulate all the new 2018 Section and Chapter leadership.

I am serving as the IEEE Northern Virginia Section Chair for 2018.  For this new year, I want to take the opportunity to share my gratitude to serve as your chair.  It is my duty to ensure activities are focused on increasing member engagement and satisfaction representing your concerns on the Region 2 committee.

For 2018, my vision is that the Northern Virginia Section continues to provide professional development, networking opportunities, and community outreach to the Northern Virginia area and the National Capital Region with our sister Sections, Washington and Baltimore.  We will incorporate events to increase awareness of member benefits, quarterly. Lastly, the Section will look to provide focused affordable topical offerings of the following:
  • Technical Hands On Workshops
  • Technical Panels
  • Membership Development Events
We will employ methods such as surveys, LinkedIn, Twitter, and etc, try to capture you ideas and issues to help us identify topics of highest interest to our members.
Last year our regular AdCom meeting venue, Teqcorner, closed so we have been actively searching for a new home.  Since many of our chapters utilized this same location, this issue has had a dramatic impact to their offerings as well.  Our Feb AdCom will be held at the Dolley Madison Library in McLean.  And we have been offered conference room space in Reston as a possibility.  The AdCom has tried to ensure WebEx is available in light of all the changes while we work to identify a new cost effective, reasonably located venue.

As January concludes, I encourage you to look out for more opportunities for professional development, networking, and community outreach.  Some important annual events to note are:
  • IEEE Officer Leadership Training, South Area – Feb 3
  • Engineers Week – Feb 18-24
  • IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference (ISGT) –  Feb 19-22
  • IEEE-WIE Northern Virginia Officer elections – Mar/Apr
  • 2018 IEEE International Symposium on Technologies for Homeland Security (HST) – Apr 18-19
  • NCR Annual Awards Banquet – April
  • NCR Annual Picnic – July
Wishing you all the best,

Chandra Curtis, PhD
Chair, IEEE Northern Virginia Section
