Leveraging Technology for Humanity in Africa: Lessons Learned and Volunteer Opportunities

November 12, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

This Distinguished Lecture by Paul Cunningham, Chair of the IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee and President of IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology will provide an overview of sustainable development and humanitarian technology related activities of the SSIT and other IEEE Organizational Units (OUs) supported by IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee (HAC) including insight into funding opportunities offered by IEEE HAC for project and event related activities. He will also discuss opportunities for collaboration at home and abroad between IEEE and non-IEEE members through the framework of the IEEE Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT).
Paul will then contextualize this by discussing the activities of the IEEE SSIT IST-Africa SIGHT, which is focused on supporting capacity building and digital literacy levels in rural and deep rural health centers in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi and South Africa. He will also be sharing lessons learned from Health4Afrika, which is co-designing a modular adaptable platform to support primary healthcare delivery with the cooperation of a range of key stakeholders in these countries with different socio-economic and socio-cultural norms.
This will be followed by discussion and an opportunity for questions.
