Smart Inverters and Grid Integration

June 27, 2019 @ 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Co-sponsored by: Syed Ahmad

Small- and large-scale wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) generation systems are interconnecting to the electric grid at a rapid pace.  How does deploying these systems, including energy storage and/or other innovative technology, impact grid reliability, alter business models and the utility of the future? Integrating these systems requires advanced power electronics, or smart inverters, that provide grid reliability services such as voltage and frequency regulation, ride-through, dynamic current injection, and anti-islanding functionality.  This presentation explores reliability aspects of bulk power system so that you will develop a systematic, integrated understanding of how to assess the system reliability.  In addition, the lecture provides an overview of US federal regulation of public utilities and the landmark orders that shaped energy industries we have today.  Insights include why energy industries moved from traditional cost-based regulation to competitive markets in an open access environment, and how regulators encourage the use of advanced technology and non-wire alternatives in grid projects.  The goal is to increase the capacity, efficiency, or reliability of an existing or new facility while continuing to ensure that consumers have access to sustainable energy at a reasonable cost.
