Colorado School of Mines: Multiple Teaching Faculty Positions in Social Science-Engineering Design Integration

The Division of Liberal Arts and International Studies (LAIS) at Colorado School of Mines (CSM) invites applications for these positions at all ranks and is especially interested in applications from women and underrepresented minorities. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to participate in revitalizing Mines core courses, including Nature and Human Values, the required first-year writing and ethics course. Current efforts aim to produce a distinctive first- and second-year experience for Mines students through a deliberate integration of core courses, including engineering design and exposure to concepts from the humanities and social sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to advance integrative initiatives at Mines, such as the National Academy of Engineering Grand Challenges Scholars Program (which includes research- or project-based practicum, interdisciplinary curriculum, entrepreneurship, global perspective, and service learning); the Mines Idea Hub (a physical and virtual environment, including MakerSpaces to enable learning innovation); and ongoing efforts to integrate service- and project-based learning throughout students’ first and second years. The candidate should also be able to contribute to one or more of LAIS’ strategic areas of growth: environmental studies, global studies, humanitarian engineering, and/or communication. Teaching load includes 4-6 courses per academic year, depending on service load, which will include facilitating the transformation of the first- and second-year student experience.

Qualifications: Either a terminal degree or a master’s degree along with professional or academic experience and accomplishments is required. The disciplinary field is open, with a preference for social sciences in combination with engineering (or STEM) education. Applicants must have: 1) a strong commitment to active learning and student-centered teaching with undergraduate science and engineering majors; 2) a disposition to collaborative team work with scientists and engineers; 3) an active or planned teaching agenda in areas related to the intersection of science, engineering, society, and/or the environment, with a preference for additional experience in design. Preference will be given to those with a Ph.D. awarded no later than June 2016 and those with significant teaching experience. The successful candidate must have strong interpersonal and communications skills. The ideal candidate will have expertise in innovative, interdisciplinary and integrative pedagogy, STEM education, service- and project-based learning, and social justice
