The annual International Professional Communication Conference brings together members of PCS and others who are interested in a wide variety of communication topics.  At this year’s conference at the University of British Columbia, presenters covered everything from document design and user interfaces to teaching students to be better communicators and better international engineers.  As part of the conference, we spent an evening celebrating the accomplishments of our members during the Awards Reception.  This year’s reception took place at the Cecil Green House on the UBC campus, with spectacular views of the water as a backdrop.

So much of PCS history is evident during our Awards Reception, since our awards are named after PCS members, some of whom were able to attend the conference and confer their awards.  Ron Blicq, a longtime member of PCS and an accomplished teacher of technical communication, gave the award named after him to Carol Barnum (Southern Polytechnic State University) for her achievements in technical communication teaching.  Alan Chong (University of Toronto) won the Lufkin Award for Best Paper in the IPCC 2013 Conference Proceedings, while Menno de Jong (University of Twente) accepted the award for Best Paper in the IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication on behalf of himself and his co-authors.  This year George Hayhoe (Mercer University) gave the first award of the Hayhoe Fellowship to Maria Jose Herrera.  The Hayhoe Fellowship is a student award that supported Maria’s participation in the 2013 conference.  Finally, Bernard Amadei (University of Colorado at Boulder) accepted the Goldsmith Award on behalf of Engineers without Borders.  Amadei is the Founding President of EWB.

Congratulations to the award winners!  If you wish to learn more about PCS awards, you can check out the Awards page on the PCS website.
