The IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative provides multi-year scholarships and career experience opportunities to qualifying U.S. electrical engineering undergraduate students. As long as the scholar continues to meet renewal standards, he or she will receive up to three years of funding — US$2,000 the first year, $2,000 the second year and $3,000 the third year — interspersed with up to two years of valuable, hands-on career experience.     The PES Scholarship Plus Initiative Quarterly Update is available in PDF format.

IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative Application is OPEN
We are now accepting applications from undergraduate students in the US & Canada for the PES Scholarship Plus Initiative.   Our goal is to get 700 applications and distribute 400 scholarships in 2013.  Over 1,400 undergraduate students have created an account to start the application process.  The deadline to submit an application is June 30, 2013.

Golfing in Vancouver—21 July
Join your peers at Furry Creek Golf Course in Furry Creek, British Columbia, Canada on Sunday, July 21 prior to the2013 IEEE PES General Meeting. When you participate in this golf outing you will enjoy a great day of camaraderie and friendly competition to benefit both the IEEE PES Scholarship Plus  Initiative and the Next Generation of Power and   Energy Engineers. This golf outing also benefits the  expansion of  the IEEE  PES Scholarship Plus Initiative Program to Canada.  The cost is US$175 per person and sponsorship opportunities are also available.  Visit the 2013 IEEE PES General Meeting registration page.

Career Experience/Internships
Getting students to participate in career experience opportunities is fundamental to the success of the Initiative.  The objective of the career experience program is to expand the number of available career experience opportunities for students, particularly by companies that may not have been offering them in the past, to provide an efficient way for companies to supplement their own career experience programs, and to encourage companies to increase their efforts to build the pipeline of students interested in power engineering careers.   150 PES Scholars have already indicated that they have secured an internship or have a full time job.

If your company, has an internship program, please visit PES Careers.  PES Careers is uniquely designed to help students find a power engineering job after graduation (or career experiences while a student), and to help employers efficiently find the best candidates for those positions. IEEE PES offers PES Careers without charge as a service to students and their future employers, and to help address emerging engineering workforce challenges.

Thank you for your support
The program has raised $4.9 million in cash and pledges from donors for the program, nearing the half-way point of its $10 million goal. The IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative is proud to announce following organizations as new supporters: G&W  Electric Company, Commonwealth Edison, NYISO, American Transmission Company, and Beckwith Electric Company.  These organizations join the list of distinguished supporters which includes two industry leaders who have each showed their support of the program through their respective $1 million donations; S&C Foundation, which is affiliated with S&C Electric Company, as well as Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories.

Other prominent supporters of the Fund interested in solving power engineering workforce problems include The Grainger Foundation, Alstom, Doble Engineering Company, Powell Industries, Omicron Electronics Corp USA, National Grid, NextEra Energy Foundation, Cooper Power Systems, Southern California Edison, ISO New England, Autodesk, PSE&G, Ulteig, Enernex, Westinghouse, San Diego Gas & Electric, MidAmerican Energy Foundation, NSTAR, PJM Interconnection and GE Foundation..

Examples of Matching Donations
You may be able to double or triple the amount of your gift to the IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative by using your employer’s Matching Gift Program!

We are happy to announce two new donations from PSE&G and PJM Interconnection, in the amount of $5,000 each, as a result of an individual donor’s contribution of $5,000 to the program. As a result of this donor’s personal contribution of $5,000, we were able to maximize our donation through employer matching programs, for a total of $15,000!

Another example is a 100% match of a donor’s personal sponsorship of a full three-year scholarship in the amount of $7,500, payable over three years. As a result, GE Foundation is matching at 100%, for a total of 2 new three-year scholarships, in the amount of $15,000!
