IEEE Dayton Section PEAL (PE/IA/PEL) Chapter Tours Yaskawa’s Motoman Robotics Facility

On February 17, twenty members and guests of the Dayton PEAL Chapter toured Yaskawa’s Motoman Robotics facility located in Miamisburg, OH. Several dedicated Motoman employees enthusiastically toured guests through the Motoman technical education center, manufacturing facility, and finally the hit of the evening the demonstration lab!

Throughout the evening it was clearly evident why Motoman has become a leading automation robotics company. In addition, tour participants learned the history of Motoman from its 1980’s roots out of Troy, Ohio’s Hobart welding corporation with the first all-electric drive welding robot. The tour was very well received by everyone!

Pittsburgh PES/IAS Joint Chapter Hosts Electrical Power Systems of Commercial Nuclear Stations Technical Presentation

The Pittsburgh PES/IAS Joint Chapter hosted members and guests for dinner and a technical presentation by principal engineers Scott Sweat and Mark DeMaglio from the Electrical and I&C Commodities Group at Westinghouse Electric Company. The presentation covered the auxiliary electrical power system for a commercial nuclear power plant, including the purpose, structure and requirements with a focus on the Nuclear Safety and the IEEE 603 aspects.

The second part of the presentation focused on the auxiliary electrical system design for the AP1000, a Generation 3+ passive nuclear power plant that does not require AC electrical power to achieve or maintain safe shutdown. Differences between the electrical power system requirements for the AP1000 and those of the existing fleet of commercial nuclear power plants were discussed. PDHs were provided for attendees seeking continuing education credits.

Northern Virginia/DC PES Chapter Supports ISGT 2015

PES Chapter for Joint Northern Virginia and Washington member and chair, Yonael Teklu, recently served as part of the organizing committee of the ISGT 2015 Conference which took place this February in Washington, DC. His main role was maintaining the conference website as well as providing volunteer services.

The Conference is a forum for participants to discuss state-of-the-art innovations in smart grid technologies and features plenary and panel sessions as well as technical paper presentations and poster sessions. Tutorials by international experts on smart grid applications are also available. The overall theme for 2015 is “Smart Grid – Present and Future”, focusing on the future migration path for the smart grid as new and emerging technologies converge with power system developments to create smart energy systems.
