The IEEE PES UNIFACS Student Chapter successfully hosted the second Power & Energy Day on Aug. 21, 2017. Designed to promote IEEE Power & Energy Society’s mission in a broad, rapid way, the event provides scientific and technical knowledge within the area of power and energy, as well as promoting greater interaction between the public and professionals.

In the morning, with support of WIE UNIFACS, a Technical Visit to the São Francisco Hydroelectric Complex (CHESF) was held. In numbers, CHESF is responsible for serving approximately eight states in the northeast region of Brazil, which means, it is the main utility responsible for supplying electric energy in about 31% of all Brazilian territory, about 10,737 kW. The technical visit was made at the Pituaçu’s substation, located in São Marcos (Salvador-BA). The contact with professionals workers and the electrical engineering area of study was easy to understand and detailed well for the students, where the debate around the generation, transmission and distribution of electric power could be seen in practices. Students also were introduced to important knowledge tools for the proper functioning of the entire structure of an energy substation with regard to safety.

After the technical visit, a lecture cycle of technical and professional training was offered, where opportunities to be an IEEE and PES volunteer were presented.

Lectures of interdisciplinary interest were also offered, such as that given by Prof. Cristina Abreu, Director of technology, research and training of the Polytechnic Institute of Bahia, professor of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Bahia and representative of IEEE PES WIP. She talked about energy efficiency and conscious consumption.

In addition, Prof. Betânia Filha, now vice president of the Bahia Section, Region 9, spoke about the “State of the Art in Control of Small Oscillations in Power Systems.”

In summary, the event could count on the presence of UNIFACS students as well as universities from the city, and professionals not related to the area of power and energy.

Throughout the event, the students were able to interact and network, strengthening their relationship with professionals, acquiring new sources for research and for the labor market.
