PES Day Celebration: Bangladesh
A colorful celebration of IEEE PES Day, jointly organized by IEEE Bangladesh Section, IEEE PES Bangladesh Chapter and IEEE BUET Student Branch was held on April 23, 2018 at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) with more than a hundred participants as well as PES Day ambassadors. The theme of this year’s Global PES Day was “More Power to The Future”. Seven speakers from academia and industry delivered technical and professional talks to shed lights on current and future trends of power and energy research and career trends.
The program started with a rich interactive session conducted by Mr. Arnab Bhattacharjee, Lecturer, EEE, BUET. Next, Prof. Dr. Shaikh Fattah, EEE, BUET (N&A Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section; Member, IEEE PES Long Range Planning Committee and Editor, IEEE PES eNewsUpdate) delivered a talk on future directions of PES research. After that Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz, EEE, BUET, Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section and IEEE PES Women in Power (WiP) Region 10 Regional representative) discussed about the contributions and prospects for women in PES. Dr. Tareq Aziz, Associate Professor, EEE, AUST and Chair, IEEE PES Bangladesh Chapter informed the audience about the benefits of IEEE PES membership while Dr. Nahid-Al-Masood, Assistant Professor, EEE, BUET and Secretary, IEEE PES Bangladesh Chapter discussed the formation of an IEEE PES Student Chapter.
Among the speakers who joined from the industry are Dr. Md. Farid Ahmmed, PEng., Superintending Engineer, PGCB presented the role of Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Ltd. (PGCB) in electricity transmission through Bangladesh. A presentation on Smart city was delivered by Mr. Azfar Adib, Architect, Internet-of-Things, Grameenphone while Mr. Md. Azizur Rahman Molla, Deputy General Manager (Export & Project Division), Energypac Engineering Ltd. discussed about the challenges and opportunities in University-Industry Collaboration.
In addition, the formation of a “PES DAY” human chain took place in the field of ECE building, BUET. The participants also joined a green fruit display, symbolizing their vow for a green world. Finally, a quiz competition was taken based on talks by the speakers and the program ended successfully with a prize giving ceremony.
