2018 IEEE PES ISGT Asia 2018

The IEEE PES International Conference on Innovative Smart Grid Technologies (ISGT Asia 2018) was held from 22-25 May, 2018 in Singapore, the world’s gateway to Southeast Asia. The theme of this year’s conference was “Smart Grid Technologies for Smart Nations.”

ISGT Asia 2018 provided an excellent forum that brought together experts from power industry, academia, research and development organizations, electric power utilities, and energy sector service providers to discuss, share and exchange ideas related to state-of-the-art innovations in smart grid technologies for the future grid. The conference received a record number of 341 paper submissions and 388 registrations from 31 countries. Among the submissions, a large number of papers demonstrated novel theories and innovative concepts, supported by strong, analytical analyses and practical considerations. Each paper was reviewed by three reviewers, and based on rigorous reviews, 231 high quality papers were accepted for oral and poster presentations.

The conference was honoured to have Professor Saifur Rahman and Dr. Damir Novosel to be the keynote speakers on the first day of the conference. In his capacity as IEEE PES President, Professor Rahman delivered an opening address to the audience before his keynote lecture on Smart Buildings in a Smart City Connected Community, which provided a broad vision of cities of the future.  Dr. Damir Novosel’s lecture on Industry Trends and Innovations for the Grid of the Future focused on emerging trends and was very well received. The opening ceremony was chaired by ISGT Asia 2018 advisor, Professor Lalit Goel, who presented a memento to Professor Rahman and Dr Novosel in appreciation for their most informative lectures.

On 24th May, Mr Peter Nimmo from ABB, Australia, delivered a keynote lecture on Writing the Digital Future Together.  Another very interesting keynote lecture was delivered on 25th May by Dr Chen Shiun from Sarawak Energy, Malaysia, on Smart Grid Innovations and their Applicability from the perspectives of a Utility Company in a Developing Economy

The conference organized four half-day tutorials that offered a unique opportunity to disseminate in-depth information on specific topics in the field of smart grids. The tutorials spanned a wide range of topics from energy internet and machine learning for smart grid applications to reliability evaluation of smart grids. The technical program highlights included the following five engaging industry panel sessions comprising international, national and regional experts to stimulate discussions between participants on active and emerging topics in the field of smart grids.

  • Power System Operations and Renewable Energy Integration; organized by Mr Dean Sharafi, Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), Australia
  • Solar Forecasting and Grid Integration; organized by Thomas Reindl, Solar Energy Research Institute of Singapore
  • A Balancing Act among Renewable Energy (RE), Electric Vehicle (EV) & Energy Storage (ES); organized by Dr. Nagaraja Ramappa, Power Research & Development Consultants Pvt. Ltd., India
  • Large Scale Microgrids; organized by Amit Gupta, Rolls-Royce Electrical, Singapore
  • Recent Developments in Grid-connected Renewable Energy & Energy Storage; organized by Wong Wai Kin, AGL Energy Ltd, Australia
