On December 18th, 2018, IEEE BRAC University Student Branch, in association with the newly formed PES Student Chapter, held the seminar on the “Challenges and Opportunities of High Solar PV Penetrations to National Grids”. The event took place at the GDLN Center. The speaker of the seminar was Professor Tapan K. Saha, IEEE- PES Distinguished Lecturer, School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, The University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia. Attending the seminar were the Chairperson of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department, Professor Shahidul Islam Khan, and other faculty members along with 40 Student Members.
The focus of his talk was his recent research conducted in the area of solar PV integrations to grid. A large number of countries have recently increased the generation of solar PV. During his speech he talked about the opportunities and challenges of both the small scale and the centralized large scale penetrations of solar PV for maintaining the stability of the National Grid and how it could lead to a future of low carbon grid.
On Saturday, December 22, 2018, IEEE AUST Student Branch, supported by IEEE Power and Energy Society Bangladesh Chapter, Department of EEE of AUST and AUST EEE Society successfully organized an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer Program at Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST). The title was “Seminar on Emerging impacts of High Solar PV to National Grids”.
In his presentation, Professor Saha highlighted some of the recent research activities in the area of solar PV integrations. Some research outcomes and opportunities were presented in his talk as well. The current development scenario, potential and challenges of this technology and relative comparisons with other large-scale energy sources got the focus of his speech during the speech.
The seminar was attended by ten faculty members of the Department of EEE of AUST and 135 students from six different universities. The honorable speaker was given a token of gratitude by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, AUST, Professor Dr. Abdur Rahim Mollah. Professor Dr. A.K.M. Baki, the Branch Counselor of IEEE AUST student Branch presented him a souvenir on behalf of IASB.
The seminar ended with a closing speech by Dr. Tareq Aziz, Chair, IEEE Power and Energy Society Bangladesh Chapter.
