A capacity building workshop for promoting IEEE PES HAC

A dream to achieve SDGs: wonderful opportunity for learning global development with community action, SDGs Promotions, Leveraging Technology and continuing the chain of sustainability for IEEE PES HAC funded event series.

On April 22nd, 2019, IEEE MUET Student Branch organized once again a Capacity building event in collaboration with IEEE PES Humanitarian Activities Committee. This event was led by Engr. Jatendar Dharani being IEEE PES HAC Ambassador. The event was attended by 100 participants including IEEE members.

The One-Day event was comprised of several sessions including a Capacity Building interactive workshop, IEEE PES DAY 2019 Celebrations, a session on Industry Academia engagement and the themed activity Sustainable Development Drive (A recycle Project).

The event commenced with a welcome address of Prof. Dr. Asif Ali Shah (Branch Counsellor IEEE MUET). For the introduction about project Engr. Jatendar Dharani (IEEE Power & Energy Society Day Ambassador 2019/ IEEE Power & Energy Humanitarian Activities Committee Ambassador) was invited.

The first session titled, “Role of Young Professional Engineers in Achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals through Capacity Building & Leadership Training” was conducted by Engr. Naveed Ahmed Unar (Assistant Executive Engineer (GSO) at National Transmission & Dispatch Company Limited, MoE, Power Division, Pakistan).

The session was followed by another session tilted “IEEE PES HAC initiatives and SDGs promotions”, addressed by Professor Emeritus/Advisor MUET Prof. Dr. Bhawani Shankar Chowdhry.

The Workshop in Sustainable Development brought together the knowledge and theories that students have gained in the classroom and gives them the opportunity to apply them to craft every day, practical solutions.

The 2nd PES Global Day was celebrated at MUET with the slogan “More Power to the Future”. Prof. Dr. Bhawani Shankar Chowdhry Distinguished National Professor, Professor Emeritus, MUET, Engr. Naveed A Unar, Assistant Executive Engineer (GSO) of NTDC. MoE, Power Division Pakistan were the guest speakers of the event.

Prof. Dr. Mohammad Aslam Uquaili Vice Chancellor MUET graced the event as Chief Guest. celebration was officially marked by a cake cutting ceremony by the chief guest Prof. Dr. M. Aslam Uqaili, Vice Chancellor MUET along with guest speaker Engr. Naveed A Unar.

The chief guest of the event Prof. Dr. Muhammad Aslam Uqaili while addressing the participants/guests said that for sustainable development every single of us should make effort. Highlighting the issue of energy crisis, he further added we can minimize the energy crisis if we try to control our daily unwanted expenditures. For concern water issue, whole world is facing water shortage crisis. But as much water is utilized in ineffective way here is not like in developed countries. He further added solution for energy crisis by saying that if we adopt solar energy and other renewable energy resources that we can overcome this problem. He advised that if we make precaution in waste usage of electricity then we can control shortage of it.

He further added that Climate change is the most significant challenge to achieving sustainable development and now a days, we have never had better know-how and solutions available to avert the crisis and create opportunities for a better life for people all over the world. Climate change is not just a long-term issue. It is happening today, and it entails uncertainties for policy makers trying to shape the future therefore the engineers are playing a key role in sustainable development.

The UN SDG Action Campaign strives to be a catalyst for the global movement for the SDGs by offering awareness raising, communications, innovation and citizen engagement solutions to partners across the globe. As it was Earth day being celebrated globally so, an activity named as “Recycle Project” was launched and executed successfully. This activity involved the participants to have hands on experience by using recycle able plastic waste to make it useful and environment friendly. They utilized the used plastic cold-drink bottles and planted trees in it.
