On April 26 2019 a lecture series in commemoration of the PES day was organized by the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) IEEE PES student branch chapter. The event allowed the students, teachers and people from the academic community to integrate and exchange knowledge and professional experiences related to the power and energy fields, a growing market in the state of Rio de Janeiro. This is the second year that the UERJ IEEE PES student chapter organizes the PES Day at the institution. The event has been strategic to help engineering students from the university to not only be aware of the advancements in the area of power and energy but also to understand the needs of this brand new market in Brazil. Work together and develop professional experiences, helping the students of Engineering of the University to become best professionals through technical visits, lectures, events, projects, among other activities, have been a mission of the UERJ PES IEEE student chapter.

According to the organizers, the event aimed to celebrate PES Day and generating a direct contact of the listeners with innovations and knowledge of the market from an energy perspective. “The event has focus on the energy technology development and is not exclusive to engineering students, everyone depends on technology and its important to approach the society from this perspective” said Igor dos Prazeres, vice president of the IEEE Student Branch and President of PES IEEE Student Chapter.

The PES Day at UERJ featured a series of lectures by professors and researchers from the university, energy experts and active members of the power and energy markets in Brazil. The lectures were given by Luiz Artur Pecorelli Peres, coordinator of the Group of Studies of Electric Vehicles (GRUVE), Paulo Gomes and Antonio Lima, professors of the UERJ School of Engineering (FEN), as well as a guest professionals, like Lincoln Barreto. Several key issues were addressed at the event, such as: electric vehicles, the National Interconnected System (SIN), renewable energies, hydroelectric and demand forecasting models. The event also had technical visits to hydroelectric power plants and also discussions about innovations within the power and energy sector in Brazil.

PES Day was created in 2016 through the initiative of student volunteers, aiming to promote students a day of immersion on various topics of electrical engineering. The initiative gained worldwide knowledge and began to be reproduced in other student branches, until becoming a world event of the PES chapter in 2018, usually in April.
