On November 30th and December 1st, 2018, over 27 participants of the Energy Sector and students from Queretaro and Guanajuato States, join the “Substation Maintenance Seminar” in Queretaro, Mexico. The special guest was the PES Distinguished Lecturer Enrique Tejera, High Voltage Section Manager for the Panama Canal Authority and IEEE Senior Member.

On the first day, the agenda covered all the components, substation schemes, configuration and safety procedures. The most important topic was the common test for HV equipment, in which the speaker explained how the test was done in Panama and the main results, emphasizing the results in the gas and voltage levels of the different test done. Participants asked the instructor’s advice and data that could improve their daily work, based on his experience. Meals and coffee break were included on this day.

On the second day participants were introduced to the Smart Grid definition, components and tendency of this topic. Another topic review was the Distributed Generation and its implication on the Transmission and Distribution Systems. On this day, Jesus Gonzales Flores, Mexico Council and Caribbean PES Representative gave the PES Overview to the participants, so they could know all the activities, programs and benefits of the membership.

At the end of the seminar, speaker shared an important solar project in Panama, in which several solar panels will be held in the Panana Channel.

As a result of this seminar, two new members joined IEEE on January 2019.
