The IEEE PES SBC at University of Manchester organised a Technical Lecture and social event for PES Day 2019.

The IEEE Power and Energy Society Student Branch Chapter University of Manchester was delighted to host Prof Keith Bell from University of Strathclyde on 29th April 2019 from 17:30 to 18:30.36 students (MSc and PhD) and academic staff attended the lecture including 8 PES members. We also organised a social event in a local pub after the lecture.

Prof Bell delivered his lecture entitled “Accommodating Distributed Energy Resources: Technical, Commercial and Regulatory Challenges” This talk discusses the technical, regulatory and policy challenges inherent in planning and operating power systems with high penetrations of Distributed Energy Resources (DER): distribution connected generators, flexible demand and energy storage. Starting from the premise that optimal distribution networks are those that satisfy the objective of a lowest cost power system whilst meeting customers’ expectations of reliability and societal desire for sustainability, it highlights major challenges that utilities and policy makers face. The slides are available online.

After the lecture, Mr Mingyu Han, the chair of IEEE PES student branch, invited all the committee members including the Mr. James Hill and Dr Angeliki Loukatou who served the committee during 2018-2019 to a local pub. A free drink was offered to every attendee and we had a great chance to chat with our PhD life and volunteering inside the PES student branch.
