Obituary: Mohamed “Mo” El-Hawary, President of IEEE Canada (2002- 2003)

Mohamed “Mo” El-Hawary, Professor in the department of ECE at Dalhousie University in Halifax, N.S., Canada and a dedicated PES volunteer died on 26 July at the age of 76. He was the president of IEEE Canada from 2002 to 2003.

He was IEEE Secretary in 2004 and 2005. He also served on the IEEE Fellows Committee and sat on the board of IEEE’s honor society, Eta Kappa Nu, of which he was also a member. He was the Founding Editor of Power Letters of PES and a distinguished lecturer of IEEE PES and IAS. He served as Chair of the Power System Operations Committee, Life Long Learning subcommittee, the Operating Economics Subcommittee and a member of the Awards Committee of PES.

El-Hawary was a Life Fellow of IEEE and received many honors and awards, such as the IEEE PES Outstanding Power Engineering Educator Award and the IEEE Educational Activities Board’s 1999 Meritorious Achievement Award in Continuing Education. He authored more than 10 textbooks and almost 200 journal papers. El-Hawary is survived by his wife, Ferial, an IEEE Life Fellow and also a dedicated volunteer and by three children, eight grandchildren, and two sisters.
