The First IEEE Smart Grid Newsletter Compendium

Tuesday, August 18th, 2015

The IEEE Smart Grid Newsletter Compendium “Smart Grid: The Next Decade” is the first of its kind promotional compilation featuring 32 “best of the best” insightful articles from recent issues of the IEEE Smart Grid Newsletter and will be the go-to resource for industry professionals for years to come.

The Compendium also introduces for the first time the IEEE Smart Grid domains and sub-domains created by IEEE Smart Grid members who were inspired by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Conceptual Model. Each of the 32 articles is categorized into its appropriate IEEE Smart Grid sub-domain.

For more Smart Grid related articles, please visit the IEEE Smart Grid Newsletter. The IEEE Smart Grid Newsletter is a complimentary monthly online publication that launched in January 2011 and features practical and timely technical information and forward-looking commentary on smart grid developments and deployments around the world.

The newsletter is designed to bring clarity to the global smart grid industry and to foster greater understanding and collaboration between diverse stakeholders, and brings together experts, thought-leaders, and decision-makers to exchange information and discuss issues affecting the evolution of the smart grid.

GEFCom2012 Proposal

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

Proposal: 2012 Global Energy Forecasting Competition (GEFCom2012)

Prepared by

Dr. ML Chan,              Chair, Power System Planning and Implementation Committee

Dr. Anil Pahwa,           Chair, Power Engineering Education Committee

Dr. Tao Hong,              Chair, IEEE Working Group on Energy Forecasting

Executive Summary

Due to large scale deployment of smart meters, increasing penetration of renewable energy recourses and aging workforce, the utility industry is facing challenges in the field of energy forecasting. To help the industry improve forecasting practices, Power Systems Planning and Implementation Committee (PSPI) and Power Engineering Education Committee (PEEC) are co-sponsoring the Global Energy Forecasting Competition 2012 (GEFCom2012), which is being organized by IEEE Working Group on Energy Forecasting, a working group under PSPI Committee. The competition will bring together the state-of-the-art techniques for energy forecasting, serve as the bridge to connect academic research and industry practice, promote analytics in power engineering education, and prepare the industry to overcome forecasting challenges in the smart grid world.

The competition includes two tracks: load forecasting and wind forecasting. The winning entries will be determined by the award committee, which is formed by internationally recognized researchers and practitioners in the field, based on forecasting accuracy, clarity of documentation, rigorous of the approach, interpretability of the models and practicality to the industry. To recognize the winners of this competition, we are currently seeking financial sponsorship of $15,000 from IEEE Power & Energy Society. The funding will be used to cover awards and possible operations expenses. We are planning to offer awards to up to six winning entries, or up to three from each track. The award will be in the form of plaques and checks. The candidates will be required to attend PESGM2013 and present the proposed methodologies to be eligible to receive the awards.

PSPI note: Since this is a proposal at this point, your input will be greatly appreciated!

1. Value of Conventional Generation Resources in the ISO/RTO Markets with the Penetration of Intermittent Renewable Resources

Chair: Joseph Yan, Southern California Edison

Speakers:  TBD

The following questions will be discussed during the panel sessions.
A.        Do we have enough conventional generation resources to feed future load with current configuration of conventional generation resources considering the impending retirement of the aging power plants?
B.        Given the reduced capacity factor due to the high penetration of intermittent resources, how to evaluate the value of existing conventional dispatchable generation resources in ISO/RTO markets?
C.        If more conventional generation resources are required to achieve the balance among current conventional generation resources, intermittent resources, interchange on the grid and future load, how to send the price signal to the generation investors?
